University of Maine at Machias (UMM) Overview

The University of Maine at Machias is a public institute of higher learning with an exceptional reputation for its academic programs in environmental liberal arts.

Programs of study at UMM focus on personal attention and academic success. The coastal ecosystems and Maine communities of the area make perfect classrooms for its academic programs. Students collaborate with faculty in small classes and have many opportunities to participate in undergraduate research and internships.

University of Maine at Machias Undergraduate Degree Offerings

UMM awards Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in psychology and community studies; biology (concentrations in fisheries biology, wildlife biology, and pre-professional preparation in dentistry, medicine, optometry, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine); business and entrepreneurial studies (self-designed concentration); college studies (secondary mathematics education and self-designed program option); elementary teacher education, environmental studies (self-designed concentration); English (concentrations in creative writing and literary studies); interdisciplinary fine arts (concentrations in book arts, creative writing, music, theater, and visual arts); marine biology; and environmental recreation and tourism management (areas of specialization in adventure recreation, park management, sports and fitness management, and tourism management).

University of Maine at Machias Core Curriculum

The strong environmental liberal arts core curriculum at UMM provides students with thinking and communications skills they will need for successful careers and lives. It encourages community engagement and active learning through academics and the real application of students' learned knowledge.

All bachelor's degree candidates, no matter the academic programs, must fulfill specific general requirements, including earning at least 120 credits before graduation and maintaining a cumulative GPA of a minimum of 2.00.

University of Maine at Machias Facilities

UMM offers a myriad of special programs, facilities, and community programs to its students.

The university art gallery features both special exhibits as well as a permanent collection.

The Center for Lifelong Learning is a recreation and fitness center for the university and the Washington County community. Monthly or annual memberships, as well as day passes, are available for the CLL's pool, gymnasium, and cardiovascular and strength training equipment. Personal trainers are also available for hire.

The Downeast Institute is a nonprofit organization that serves as a marine field station for the university, and is located just 30 miles from campus in Black Duck Cove.

The University of Maine at Machias also offers an Early College Program for students who have not yet graduated high school and are from Hancock and Washington counties. The participating high school students have the opportunity to take courses at the university.

UMM also offers a child care facility to serve the needs of its students and faculty. The Elizabeth Clarke Flaherty ECEC serves full- and part-time infants through pre-school aged children.

University of Maine at Machias Career Development

Career development offers a comprehensive career-planning program designed to help students with self-assessment, career exploration, job search, and graduate school planning. Many of the school's career development department resources are accessible online, but for this process to be most beneficial, students should come to the career center. The office also coordinates Cooperative Education and International Student Services.

University of Maine at Machias Campus Life

UMM students have access to a wide variety of activities on campus including varsity sports, intramural sports, and student organizations. Varsity sports include men's basketball, cross country, golf, and soccer and women's basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, and volleyball.

There are two residence halls on campus including Dorward Hall and Sennett Hall. Residence halls are staffed by full-time professional staff and student resident assistants. Each residence hall has a security access swipe system for safety and convenience allowing access to the halls' front doors, rooms, and a 24-hour reading room.
