University of Saskatchewan - Overview
Welcome to the University of Saskatchewan!
Founded in 1907, the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) is located in Saskatchewan's largest city, Saskatoon, which is located on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River and is the economic hub of the province with a population of approximately 250,000. Saskatoon has big, beautiful open skies, northern lights and is one of the sunniest cities in Canada. Known as Canada's "Science City", Saskatoon is world renowned for its incomparable mix of scientific infrastructure and is home to Canada's only synchrotron, the Canadian Light Source. Saskatoon is home to big-city amenities, a small-town heart, and is the quintessential college town. Quality shopping malls, hot concerts, interesting restaurants, trendy coffee shops, and shopping districts are coupled with friendly, safe neighborhoods, and diverse community events and festivals. Here, buildings aren't skyscrapers; they're castles on the river. People from this city are not urbanites; they're Saskatoonians - friendly and welcoming. They welcome students to their vibrant and diverse cultural and artistic community.
The University of Saskatchewan Campus
The U of S campus is also situated on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River and is directly connected to the vibrant downtown with the arching bridges and riverbank pathways that earn the city its reputation as the "Paris of the Prairies". Taking a stroll around campus, people immediately feel the collegiate atmosphere, ivy-league ambiance, and when they arrive on campus, they will be welcomed by the community of energetic students, approachable professors, and helpful staff. The University of Saskatchewan community supports all students and gladly helps them feel at home.
The University of Saskatchewan is proud to have one of the most beautiful campuses in Canada. Students can enjoy the park-like campus in the summer months and take advantage of the tunnels and sky-walks in the winter; almost all of the main buildings are inter-connected. Charming greystone comprises the oldest buildings (and is carried on into the newer ones as well), and it is this solid foundation from which the successful university, city, and province have sprung.
The University of Saskatchewan as a Research University
As a top tier research university in Canada and the largest university in the province of Saskatchewan, the U of S is the only English-speaking University in Canada with such a broad combination of human, animal, and plant studies found on one campus - offerings include pharmacy, dentistry, medicine, veterinary medicine, law, nutrition and dietetics, engineering, commerce, arts and sciences, nursing, education, kinesiology, agriculture and bioresources, fine arts, and more. Students at the University of Saskatchewan, who hail from over 100 countries, work together with professors and researchers to advance science and contribute to the community and the world. At the University of Saskatchewan, students benefit from a quality education, internationally-recognized faculty members, and dedicated support for the university's students.
The University of Saskatchewan Student Body
The U of S student body consists of approximately 17,000 undergraduates and 3,500 graduates from over 100 countries. This moderate size enables a more personal experience for students. Using the most recent data, the University of Saskatchewan ranks #1 for small class sizes among competitor schools. To top it all off, it has one of the lowest student-faculty member ratios among competitor schools in Canada (Maclean's). The U of S is a research intensive, medical-doctoral university that cares not only about research, but also about students and their ideas. Here students don't have to be anonymous faces in the classroom. Here classrooms are less like lecture halls and more like forums for discussion.
The U of S also excels at supporting student success. The International Student and Study Abroad Centre (ISSAC), provides support to international students and their families. The centre is dedicated to fostering a globally aware and engaged campus community. All students -- domestic, international, and those studying abroad -- can participate in unique international experiences through ISSAC's various programs and services. Some of the services include: settling in Saskatoon; Canadian culture and cross culture learning; meeting new people and getting involved in campus activities and groups; English language help; peer leaders; study permit, work permit, health card, or temporary visa advice; and much more. In addition to the help and services provided by ISSAC, the U of S campus community also has offices that will assist with employment, co-op and internship work placements, awards and financial aid, health and counseling, athletics, student clubs, multi-faith religious services, disability services, learning communities, academic advisors, campus safety, and information centers. The U of S also offers a wide array of facilities to help with students' overall success. Some of these facilities include the bookstore, computer store, University Learning Centre, 8 libraries with over 2 million printed resources, over 60 computer labs, free WiFi throughout campus, Physical Activity Complex (PAC) and over 20 restaurants, cafeterias, and eateries on campus, all of which offer a large variety of western and international foods that are made fresh on campus.
The university encourages interested students to discover the University of Saskatchewan for themselves and learn why over 144,000 alumni who have gone on to become, among other things, Rhodes Scholars, Nobel prize winners, Prime Ministers, CEOs, entrepreneurs, scholars, teachers, nurses, engineers and actors, chose to start their journeys at the U of S.
