Overview

USI: An Engaged, Fast-Growing University

The University of Southern Indiana is one of the fastest-growing institutions in the region, enrolling more than 10,700 students from 90 Indiana counties, 41 states, and 67 nations, including significant populations of both traditional, nontraditional, residential, and commuter students. Located in Evansville, Indiana, the state's third largest city, USI is a comprehensive public university, classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as an engaged university for both Curricular Engagement and Outreach and Partnerships.

More than 70 undergraduate and graduate academic programs are offered through the Colleges of Business, Education and Human Services, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Health Professions, and Science and Engineering. USI is accredited by North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools (NCA). Programs in accounting, business, chemistry, education, engineering, health professions, communications, and social work are accredited by the appropriate professional organizations and state agencies (for example, AACSB (Business) and ABET (Engineering)). The University strives to maintain a low student-faculty ratio to enhance learning; the average class size is 25 students.

The academic calendar consists of two 15-week semesters and three summer terms. A full-time ESL program is also available throughout the year.

Shaping the Future through Learning and Innovation

USI is an engaged learning community advancing education and knowledge, enhancing civic and cultural awareness, and fostering partnerships through comprehensive outreach programs. The university prepares individuals to live wisely in a diverse and global community.

A `New American College' Emphasizing Teaching, Scholarship, and Applied Research

Founded in 1965, the University of Southern Indiana has undergone a major transformation in academic programs and in instructional and support facilities. The University is a regionally responsive, needs-driven university in the model of the "new American college." Emphasizing teaching and interaction between faculty and students, the University values both need-based applied research and basic research, and actively pursues engagement in the region. The University of Southern Indiana's appeal to students is found in its size, the accessibility of professors, its beautiful environment and innovative housing, its proximity to an urban center, and the friendliness of students, employees, and the community.

The University of Southern Indiana has created an environment where teaching and learning are foremost in its mission and where the energy and dedication of faculty and staff have become a model for other universities. Faculty members not only teach, but guide students' academic work as advisors and engage in scholarly work and service. The faculty's commitment to continual improvement in teaching has produced increasing quality of instruction and graduate preparedness.

Southern Indiana: An Ideal Size, Location for the University Experience

Surrounded by woods and lakes, the USI campus is on 1,400 acres (567-hectacre). It is situated in beautiful rolling hills on the edge of Evansville. A cultural and economic hub for the region, Evansville is located in the southwestern tip of Indiana, on the banks of the Ohio River. The city's moderate size of approximately 130,000 residents (with the larger metro area at nearly 350,000) provides the activity and accessibility of a large metropolitan city while maintaining the special charm of a small river town. Rated as one of the safest cities in the U.S., Evansville has been designated an 'All-America City' by the National Civic League.

Numerous recreational activities are available in the city, including live concerts throughout the year, theatrical productions, and sports. Evansville is a comfortable drive from metropolitan areas such as Chicago, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis. The climate of the region is moderate, offering four distinct seasons throughout the year.

A safe, comfortable residential campus

Approximately 2,500 students live in campus apartments or suite-style residence halls that have laundry facilities, computer labs, and e-mail access. Apartments are two bedrooms and two bathrooms, a living room, a dining area, and a kitchen. The suite-style halls, which are shared bedrooms with a bathroom and a common area, combine the benefits of a traditional residence hall with the popular apartment-style housing at USI. Housing is available during the academic year and summer terms. A full meal plan is available in the campus dining center and restaurants when classes are in session.

Campus Life

The university has more than 80 clubs and organizations. An active Student Government Association serves as the voice of the students. The campus is always active with major campus events, films, lecture series, and other entertainment throughout the year. Many athletic, health-related and sport activities are offered by the fitness center, which is free to all students.

International Programs and Services designed to meet your needs

The Office of International Programs and Services provides many services to meet the unique needs of international students. An international orientation program is held before the beginning of each semester. Ongoing programs include the Host Family Program, Conversation Partners, and the International Outreach Program. The Global Community Floor in Ruston Hall offers students the opportunity to interact with American and international students in a comfortable, cross-cultural setting. The International Club has many social and cultural events throughout the year including several trips, multicultural food expo, an international soccer team, and local activities.

English as a Second Language

The ESLI Language Center helps prepare students with intensive English training for entrance to the University. The ESLI curriculum is focused on the needs and goals of each student. Personal attention and gifted teachers are the ESLI trademark.
