Academics, Work, and Service at Warren Wilson College

The core of a Warren Wilson College education is based on 3 principles: academics, work, and service. The degree curricula at this institution are centered on the student's courses of study, in conjunction with work and service hours. Students regularly leave the traditional classroom setting and take their learning into the field. For example, instead of learning chemistry in the traditional lab setting, students might analyze one of the many rivers in the area for water quality, or students studying literature might start literary magazines. For bachelor's degrees, Warren Wilson College offers over 40 majors and minors. All students are required to attend at least one class within every one of the college's 8 liberal arts areas.

All students of Warren Wilson College are required to log 15 hours of work per week with assigned work crews. These crews comprise over 100 teams that are a vital part of the college's daily operation. Students perform all variety of tasks from computer repair and designing publications, to dorm maintenance and plowing fields. In return for their work, students are compensated close to $3,500 in credit toward their tuitions.

Also, over the course of 4 years, students are required to log at least 100 hours of community service from skills gained either in class or via their work crews. Students at Warren Wilson College serve in positions of all kinds, such as tutors, plumbers, fundraisers, and environmentalists.
