Overview

Wilkes University Helps Students Develop the Confidence and Independence that Enable Them to Achieve Their Goals

Wilkes University is a non-sectarian, independent university whose primary mission is to encourage students to discover and develop that which is unique about them. By encouraging freedom of thought and providing a mature environment in which students can confidently express their ideas and speak their minds, Wilkes fosters intellectual and personal growth. The school encourages intellectual experimentation and actualization of independent vision. Whether students are interested in starting a business, making important scientific discoveries, contributing to culture, or becoming actively involved in changing the world around them, Wilkes helps them along the path to making lives out of their passions.

Connections to Business and Community Open Exciting Doors for Wilkes Students

Located in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Wilkes University has a student population of approximately 2,200 full-time undergraduate students. The 34-acre campus includes eight academic buildings and twenty residence halls. The small community is fully integrated with the surrounding town and with the nation. Involvement with other organizations and connections to business and academic institutions make Wilkes a center of distinctive opportunities. For example, business students help local restaurants become lean, green and sustainable; English students lead writing workshops at a local domestic violence service center; and engineering students hone their skills during cooperative learning experiences at local industries. They graduate with skills employers need.

Wilkes University's Campus and Surroundings Display a Unique Blend of History and Modern Amenities

The campus itself has much to offer students who study at Wilkes. A new science building will open in fall 2013. Many of the historic buildings on campus still have their original interiors. In blending stone fireplaces and stained glass with modern equipment, the ivy-covered mansion buildings house the latest in state-of-the-art facilities for every academic discipline. The campus' iconic statue of John Wilkes, for whom the university is named, provides a symbol of the Wilkes community. Wilkes University is located in a setting that also blends the past and the present. The historical neighborhood in which it is situated is less than three hours from Manhattan or Philadelphia, allowing students access to the best of both worlds.

Mentoring Gives Students a Chance to Receive and Give Lasting Guidance and Develop Relationships

Within this idyllic setting, students receive the kind of personal attention that only a small university like Wilkes is equipped to offer. A low student-faculty ratio provides a small average class size, allowing students to interact with each other in meaningful discussion. Additionally, the school is distinguished by its Mentoring Task Force. The Mentoring Task Force coordinates projects that allow students to work one-on-one with faculty members and with each other in mentoring relationships. Students develop lasting connections and receive not only academic guidance but personal and professional guidance as well.

Wilkes Offers All the Study Options of a Large University in a Small-University Setting

Wilkes University graduates are well equipped to become successful in any field they choose to pursue. In contrast to many liberal arts colleges of the same size, Wilkes offers programs of study in every field through six colleges that range from the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences to the Sidhu School of Business and Leadership to the Nesbitt College of Pharmacy and Nursing. Varied degree programs in each of the schools allow students to obtain educations that keep pace with those of larger universities while studying in a personal environment. In addition, flexible study options, such as part-time, continued learning, and general programs of study, allow students a range of possibilities that they would be hard-pressed to find at other small colleges and universities.

Student Life Outside the Classroom Is Varied and Dynamic at Wilkes University

Although the Wilkes curriculum is demanding and challenging, students have ample free time to develop themselves as individuals. Outside the classroom, student life at Wilkes University can be dynamic, well-rounded, and exciting. Students who do not wish to travel off-campus for recreational activities have plenty to choose from on campus, with more than seventy student organizations that cover every interest from a student newspaper to a ski club. Community service opportunities are plentiful, and students have the chance to develop leadership skills by participating in clubs, mentoring, and leadership programs.

Internship and Cooperative Study Opportunities Engage Students in Experiential Learning

In addition to the range of degree programs, Wilkes students have access to numerous internship and co-op opportunities in the surrounding community. Wilkes values the unique education that can only come from hands-on experience, and the school strives to build connections with local employers to give students the benefit of experiential learning. Participating in co-ops and internships also gives students the chance to meet potential employers and gain valuable employment references. These opportunities demonstrate the commitment that Wilkes University upholds to make the benefits of a Wilkes education extend well beyond graduation.
