Detailed Information

Program of Study

Adelphi’s graduate biology program prepares students for doctoral study and entrance into professional schools of medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine. The program also qualifies future educators for certification and expands the knowledge base of experienced teachers. Other graduates acquire the tools and skills necessary for successful careers in research, public health, and environmental law. At Adelphi, students gain a broad foundation in biology, practical experience, and the fundamental skills of scientific research. Laboratory courses emphasize contemporary scientific techniques and integrate technology into the learning experience. Faculty members work closely with students as mentors, ensuring a personal academic experience and career guidance. It is possible to fulfill degree requirements on the basis of either full- or part-time study, with completion in one to two years of full-time study.

There are two paths to the master’s degree–the research thesis (33 credits) and the nonthesis option (36 credits). Requirements are subject to change. Most courses are offered in the evening for the convenience of the working student. Adelphi students have opportunities to gain professional experience through internships at many hospitals, laboratories, private medical and dental practices, and research institutions in the area.

Students seeking a graduate degree and New York State teaching certification for secondary-level teaching (grades 7 through 12) can complete required course work for a Master of Arts degree through Adelphi’s graduate program in biology in conjunction with the School of Education. Students who successfully complete the program are awarded a Master of Arts from the School of Education.

Adelphi also offers a Master of Science (M.S.) degree with a concentration in biotechnology. This innovative program prepares students for careers in this rapidly expanding and dynamic discipline of biotechnology and in the related fields of pharmaceuticals, biomedical research, cancer research, and laboratory medicine. Students may pursue a research thesis track or a scholarly paper track; a limited number of teaching assistantships are available.

Research Facilities

Departmental laboratory facilities include modern equipment for the study of molecular biology, cell and tissue culture, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Students use these facilities for graduate research in cellular and molecular biology, immunology, genetics, evolution, and ecology.

The University’s primary research holdings are at Swirbul Library and include 646,720 volumes (including bound periodicals and government publications), 805,545 items in microformats, 32,353 audiovisual items, 1,738 periodical subscriptions, and access to over 27,000 electronic journal titles. Online access is provided to more than 200 research databases.

Financial Aid

Adelphi University offers a wide variety of federal aid programs, state grants, scholarship and fellowship programs, on- and off-campus employment, and teaching and research assistantships.

Cost of Study

For the 2008–09 academic year, the tuition rate is $830 per credit. University fees ranged from $200 to $400 per semester.

Living and Housing Costs

The University assists single and married students in finding suitable accommodations whenever possible. The cost of living is dependent on location and the number of rooms rented.

Location

Located in historic Garden City, New York, 45 minutes from Manhattan and 20 minutes from Queens, Adelphi’s 75-acre suburban campus is known for the beauty of its landscape and architecture. The campus is a short walk from the Long Island Rail Road and is convenient to New York’s major airports and several major highways. Off-campus centers are located in Manhattan, Hauppauge, and Poughkeepsie.

The University and The College

Founded in 1896, Adelphi is a fully accredited, private university with more than 8,000 undergraduate, graduate, and returning-adult students in the arts and sciences, business, clinical psychology, education, nursing, and social work. Students come from thirty-seven states and forty-five countries. The Princeton Review named Adelphi University a Best College in the Northeastern Region, and the Fiske Guide to Colleges recognized Adelphi as a “Best Buy” in higher education for two years in a row. The University is the only private institution on Long Island and one of only twenty-six in the nation to earn this recognition.

Mindful of the cultural inheritance of the past, the College of Arts and Sciences encompasses those realms of inquiry that have characterized the modern pursuit of knowledge. The faculty members of the College place a high priority on their students’ intellectual development in and out of the classroom and structure programs and opportunities to foster that growth. Students analyze original research or other creative work, develop firsthand facility with creative or research methodologies, undertake collaborative work with peers and mentors, engage in serious internships, and hone communicative skills.

Applying

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in biology or an allied field or its equivalent and show promise of successful achievement in the field. A student must submit the completed application form, a $50 application fee, official college transcripts, and two letters of recommendation. For more information, students should contact the director of graduate studies.
