Programs of Study
Argosy University, Chicago, offers the Graduate Certificate in psychoanalytic psychology; the Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in clinical psychology, industrial organizational psychology, and community counseling; the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree in counseling psychology, counselor education and supervision, and organizational leadership; and the Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree in clinical psychology. Students completing a program may wish to become licensed professionals. Argosy University, Chicago does not guarantee third-party certification/licensure. The Graduate Certificate in psychoanalytic psychology provides specialized training in psychoanalytic psychology for post-master’s and doctoral clinicians with relevant background and experience. The certificate is designed to meet the need for education and training in assessment, intervention, and supervision within a broad psychoanalytic model. The curriculum provides a firm grounding in major theoretical paradigms with special attention to those which are current and emerging. Graduates of the psychoanalytic psychology certificate will be prepared to work effectively within a psychoanalytic framework and begin additional training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy or psychoanalysis.
The M.A. in Clinical Psychology program has been designed to educate and train students to pursue a professional career as master’s-level practitioners. The program is designed to provide students with an educational program with all the necessary theoretical and clinical elements that will allow them to be effective members of a mental health team. It introduces students to basic clinical skills that integrate individual and group theoretical foundations of applied psychology into appropriate client interaction and intervention skills. This program can be completed in as little as two years and must be completed in five years. In addition, the program offers preparation for those considering application to the Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology program.
The M.A. in Industrial Organizational Psychology is designed to apply the knowledge of industrial organizational psychology to issues involving individuals and groups in organizational and work settings. This program is designed to prepare students for careers in areas such as compensation, training, data analysis, consultation, statistical decision-making, organizational development, leadership, and human resource management positions. The curriculum is competency-based, focusing on the outcomes of training and on the knowledge, skills, and behavior necessary to function as a master’s-level professional in industrial organizational psychology. This is an interdisciplinary program that combines the expertise of the faculty in the College of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences and the College of Business.
The M.A. in Community Counseling program creates a learning environment that is designed to promote academic excellence, professional competence, and personal integrity. This is achieved through a curriculum that integrates counseling skills, theoretical foundations of counseling, and clinical field experience into appropriate interaction and intervention skills for utilization in a variety of settings with diverse client populations. We serve a diverse student body from urban, suburban, and rural areas who are intrinsically motivated to help others. The program actively engages faculty and students in the preparation of counselors who meet the needs of diverse communities.
The Ed.D. in Counseling Psychology program is designed to meet the special requirements of working mental health professionals motivated to develop their knowledge and skills to handle the changing needs of modern organizations. The program is designed to provide working professionals with the opportunity to pursue their personal and professional goals through the completion of a graduate program. An optional concentration in counselor education and supervision is available.
The Ed.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision program aligns with the master’s-level counselor education programs in order to encourage entry-level counseling students to work toward becoming doctoral-level advanced practitioners, educators, and supervisors. The program prepares counselors for a variety of settings by providing the advanced skills and knowledge necessary to provide leadership and advocacy, as well as serve in supervisory, training, and teaching positions in the counseling profession. The program is designed to help current practitioners with existing master’s-level preparation to advance their careers.
The Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership program is designed to meet the special requirements of working professionals who wish to develop their knowledge and skills to handle the changing needs of modern organizations. The program is designed to enable working professionals to pursue their personal and professional goals through the completion of a graduate program.
The Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology program has been designed to educate and train students so that they may be able to function effectively as clinical psychologists. To ensure that students are prepared adequately, the curriculum provides for the meaningful integration of theory, training, and practice. The program emphasizes the development of attitudes, knowledge, and skills essential in the formation of professional psychologists who are committed to the ethical provision of quality services.
Research Facilities
Argosy University libraries provide curriculum support and educational resources, including current text materials, diagnostic training documents, reference materials and databases, journals and dissertations, and major and current titles in program areas. There is an online public-access catalog of library resources available throughout the Argosy University system. Students have remote access to the campus library database, enabling them to study and conduct research at home. Academic databases offer dissertation abstracts, academic journals, and professional periodicals. All library computers are Internet accessible. Software applications include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SPSS, and various test-scoring programs.
