Master of Science Programs Are Offered in Nutrition and Public Health Nutrition Along with a Ph.D. in Nutrition
The Department of Nutrition at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, is committed to high standards in the education and training for students pursuing careers in nutritional biochemistry and metabolism, molecular nutrition, dietetics, public health nutrition, or other biomedical sciences; students preparing for careers in medicine, dentistry, or nursing; health professionals desiring continuing education; and students for whom knowledge of nutrition will enhance their lives, professions, and contributions to society.
Case Western Reserve University students can earn an Master of Science or a Ph.D. in nutrition. A Master of Science in public health nutrition that includes an accredited dietetic internship is also offered.
The Ph.D. Program Is Thorough, Providing a Broad Perspective and Excellent Foundation
The mission of the Case Western Reserve University Ph.D. program in nutrition in is to increase the number of scientists, academicians, and researchers who understand how to integrate the disciplines of molecular biology, metabolism, and nutritional science to formulate questions and solve problems in relation to the metabolic diseases of society. The increasing number of metabolic disease problems, e.g., diabetes, require these appropriately trained individuals.
Students in Case Western Reserve University's Ph.D. program work closely with a research adviser and mentor who has an active NIH funded research program for their focused research area. In addition, through course work and seminars, students gain a broad perspective and excellent foundation in the requisite knowledge and skills of molecular biology, biochemistry, and metabolism as well as in nutrition for health promotion and disease prevention.
Case Western Reserve University, a major research institution, has outstanding resources to support the education of students. The School of Medicine has three new research laboratory buildings: Wolstein, the Biomedical Research Building (BRB), and the Research Tower addition to the Wood Building. The Department of Nutrition has all the necessary equipment and facilities to conduct cutting-edge research. The university is ranked No. 1 for total NIH research dollars for nutrition departments in schools of medicine in the U.S.
Students complete the Ph.D. degree within 4 to 6 years. The four-year completion usually occurs with a student who has earned the M.S. in nutrition at CWRU prior to beginning the Ph.D. program. During the M.S. in nutrition, these students would have already completed certain course work, such as biochemistry, nutritional biochemistry and metabolism, human physiology, and advanced human nutrition science.
Case Western Reserve University Conducts Research and Performs Community Outreach
In part, the Department of Nutrition contributes to the development of nutrition science, dietetic practice, public health and education by planning and conducting research. The department also encourages participation in interdisciplinary research activities, provides consultations to the Cleveland, Ohio, community, and disseminates information through publications and presentations.
The department also demonstrates leadership and contributes to society by participating in professional groups and learned societies. Furthermore, it collaborates with the community in Cleveland, Ohio, to enhance the quality of life.
Students Receive Full Financial Support Throughout Their Programs
Each Ph.D. student (domestic or international) receives full tuition support for their entire program, a yearly stipend of $25,000, and payment of student health insurance. Case Western Reserve University awards the same stipend as all other basic science departments in the School of Medicine. Support comes from the NIH grant of the student's research adviser in most cases. The number of new Department of Nutrition Ph.D. student openings in a given year is determined by the current grant funding of the research faculty. In addition to tuition, stipend, and health insurance, all Case Western Reserve University Department of Nutrition Ph.D. students receive from the department a new laptop computer (loaded with software) during the first semester.
