Program in Microbiology and Immunology

Enrollment in the program in microbiology and immunology at Dartmouth Medical School offers the opportunity to pursue a Ph.D. degree at a leading academic institution that is located in an outstanding rural setting. The multidisciplinary program includes faculty members from the Departments of Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Microbiology and Immunology, Physiology, and Pharmacology and Toxicology in both the medical school and the college.

This provides a wide range of opportunity for study and interaction that is generally administered through the graduate program in molecular and cellular biology (MCB). Individuals interested in applying for admission may choose to direct their application through the MCB program or through the program in experimental and molecular medicine (PEMM).

Dartmouth Medical School course requirements and curriculum for students vary somewhat depending on the graduate program into which they are enrolled. As an example, during the first year, students enrolled in the MCB program normally take a comprehensive three-term course in molecular and cellular biology, immunology, and molecular genetics. By the end of the second year, it is generally expected that a student will have taken advanced-level courses in areas such as biochemistry, biology, microbial systems and pathogenesis, molecular genetics, and immunology; three such elective courses are required.

In addition, Dartmouth Medical School graduate programs utilize laboratory rotations in the first year as a means to introduce students to laboratories in which they may do their thesis research.

Laboratory and Research Facilities

The laboratories at Dartmouth are state-of-the-art and well equipped. In addition to Dartmouth College and Dartmouth Medical School laboratories located on the main campus, many laboratories are located on the 225-acre Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) campus in Lebanon, New Hampshire, about two miles from the main campus. The facility has fully integrated patient care, medical education, and research activities.

In addition to standard modern instrumentation available in individual laboratories, core facilities are maintained that include specialized equipment such as electron microscopes, automatic protein and DNA sequencers, tissue culture and hybridoma facilities, fluorescence-activated cell sorters, confocal image analysis, deoxyoligonucleotide synthesizer, peptide synthesizer, DNA microarrayer and scanner, DNA chip reader, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers, and equipment for state-of-the-art genomic and proteomic analyses.

Dartmouth is known for its outstanding Computation Center, which develops and licenses cutting-edge software and offers both regular and short courses and maintains a campus wide network that includes all of the laboratories.

Graduate Financial Aid and Career Placement

Each student enrolled in the Dartmouth Medical School program receives a Dartmouth Fellowship that provides a full-tuition scholarship, a prepaid health insurance plan, and a student stipend.

The microbiology and immunology graduate students receiving the Ph.D. degree from Dartmouth College are prepared for postdoctoral or faculty positions in academia, including both primarily teaching and research-oriented colleges and universities; positions in research institutes; and positions in industry, including biotech, business, or law. The placement of graduate students has been very successful and includes positions at the most prestigious institutes.

Dartmouth College MBA Program Joint Degree

Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business now offers a new joint degree. Students who have completed a doctorate degree at Dartmouth College will now have the opportunity to pursue an accelerated Master's in Business Administration (MBA) degree under a new agreement between the college's graduate studies program and the Tuck School of Business. Students in the program will matriculate at Tuck after receiving their Ph.D. and complete their MBA one term faster than regular Tuck students.

The new program simply takes the experience of Dartmouth's Ph.D. students to the next level, giving them the skills to implement financial and management decisions with their basis of scientific knowledge. Dartmouth is well-positioned to lead in this area of scientific business development. The Tuck MBA program is leading the way in business management, and Dartmouth Ph.D./MBA graduates will be able to create new career tracks for themselves, well positioned to succeed in any pursuit.

College Overview

Life in the Hanover-Lebanon area offers an attractive combination of cultural activities in a rural setting. Although small, Hanover boasts a variety of cultural, entertainment, and recreational opportunities as well as a special environment for outdoor activities. Boston, Montreal, and New York are easily accessible.

Dartmouth was founded in 1769 as a college committed to liberal learning. The Medical School was established in 1797. The smallest of the Ivy League institutions, Dartmouth has a long-standing tradition of close student-faculty ties, a tradition strongly endorsed by the graduate programs. The Hopkins Center for the Performing Arts serves as the cultural focus of Dartmouth. The center incorporates concert halls, theaters, art galleries, art studios, and crafts workshops. A wide range of subsidized musical, dance, and theatrical productions by visiting artists are sponsored by the center.

Application review begins December 15, on a rolling basis, and the deadline when all supporting documentation must be received is January 4, 2010.

It is the long-standing policy of Dartmouth to actively support equality for all persons regardless of race or ethnic background. No student is denied or otherwise discriminated against because of race, color, sex, religion, handicap, or national or ethnic origin.
