Master of Engineering Management Produces Skilled Engineers Who Understand the Essential Principles of Business and Law

Duke University's Master of Engineering Management (MEM) Program helps graduate school students become skilled engineers who understand the essential principles of business and law. By combining a core management curriculum with a master's-level technical education, the program enables graduate school students to build upon their undergraduate degrees in engineering or science and develop the marketable skills that resonate with industry: business, technology management, or entrepreneurship.

The MEM program at Duke is distinctive among engineering management programs in its integration of business, law, and engineering; the flexibility of its curriculum, which can be completed in as little as one year; and its workshops, which cover a diverse range of business topics that supplement the program's course offerings. The curriculum, offered with the support of Duke University's Fuqua School of Business and the Duke Law School, requires four core business courses, four technical electives, and an internship.

In addition to its campus program, the MEM program also offers a low-residency distance option for working professionals.

MEM Core Courses Enriched by Meaningful, Targeted Electives

MEM's core business courses consist of marketing, finance, management, and intellectual property/business law. Elective offerings are designed to provide variety and flexibility as students enhance their technical depth and/or breadth. Students may take courses at highly ranked departments within the Pratt School of Engineering, including Duke University's top-ranked Biomedical Engineering Department, or they may customize an interdisciplinary set of courses in subjects such as photonics or nanotechnology. Students may also select from a variety of topics in the areas of management of technology and entrepreneurship, including engineering management, and electives such as Commercializing Technology Innovations, Decision Models, Intellectual Asset Management, Operations Management, Engineering Entrepreneurship, or Project Management. Some electives in the Fuqua School of Business' Daytime M.B.A. program are also open to MEM students.
