Kent State University's Department of English--located in Kent, Ohio--offers an extensive range of programs of study for those seeking a bachelor's, master's, master's of fine arts, or doctoral degree. Graduate degrees available at Kent State University Department of English include a Master's in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language), Master's of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, Master's in Comparative Literature, Ph.D. in English, Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition, and doctoral focuses in rhetoric, composition, and literature.

Kent State University's Master's in English program gives students a wide-ranging view of the study of English, while giving them very specific schooling in one particular area. The master's program does this by dividing up electives, requirements, and required concentrations in particular subjects. These include literary traditions, theory, and rhetoric and composition.

The master's degrees at Kent State University require the completion of 33 graduate hours of course work. Students who concentrate in rhetoric and composition, or literary traditions may opt to complete a thesis coupled with 27 hours of graduate coursework. (The thesis is counted as 6 hours of coursework.)

All students in the master's program at Kent State University must finish "Introduction to Research and Pedagogy in Critical Reading." Kent State University graduate assistants are also required to take "Introduction to Research in the Teaching of College Writing."

They bring unique talents, skills, knowledge, and experience to the university and offer resources and services that are priceless. The faculty at the university is also known for its community engagement and makes a great effort to exercise and encourage volunteerism, and community- and service-based learning.

In fact, Kent State University as a whole emphasizes a service-learning, community- and volunteerism-based learning approach. Its recently developed Office of Experiential Education was developed to give students resources, support, and guidance so that they can create experiences throughout their academic careers that center around community outreach and civic leadership.

Another school organization designated to help students with community-based learning is AGES (Association of Graduate English Students). AGES fosters support for graduate students in the Department of English through events, meetings, and other less formal interactions. AGES also hosts events that help students in similar programs of study meet. It also fosters interactions between faculty and graduate students in instructional settings that teach students helpful information, like the procedure to prepare a CV or ways to use library resources in the classroom.

Located in Kent, Ohio, a Charming and Unique City

Kent, Ohio is home of Kent State University and has a unique atmosphere. Summers are beautiful and green and the city offers many open spaces and charming pastimes for students to enjoy year-round. Shopping is one of the city's many draws. Students of Kent State University can often be found perusing unique items and socializing amongst the city's many merchants, craftsmen, and artisans.

The city of Kent has many live music venues, restaurants, cafes, and pubs that offer cozy atmospheres for students to socialize. Popular hangouts include the Pufferbelly Restaurant and the historic Atlantic and Great Western Railway Depot.

For students who want to have some fun during their free time, there are several activities and attractions that are worth seeing. Kent offers great fishing at the Mogadore Reservoir, a fashion museum right on campus, beautiful scenery along the Cuyahoga River Edge Park and Falls, thirst-quenching microbreweries and wineries, and six lovely and scenic community parks.

Kent, Ohio is in an easily accessible location, right where State Routes 59 and 43 intersect. These roads give students easy access to the Ohio Turnpike (I-80), I-76, I-271, and I-480. Youngstown, Canton, Akron, and Cleveland are all a short drive away, no more than half-an-hour from campus.
