Overview

The George Washington University: Columbian College of Arts and Sciences M.S. Program in Biochemistry

The graduate M.S. program in biochemistry is offered through the Colombian College of Arts and Sciences at George Washington University. This program was started over 15 years ago, and many GW graduates have gone on to get advanced degrees and have successful careers in science, medicine, law, education, and business.

The M.S. program in biochemistry offers a wide range of courses, providing students with a broad general knowledge of modern biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, biotechnology, and related areas of interest. Programs are developed on an individual basis to satisfy the interests and to meet the career goals of GW students.

An unusual aspect of the M.S. in Biochemistry program, and one of Colombian College of Arts and Sciences' major strengths, is its focus on teaching technical skills as George Washington University offers a wide range of practical laboratory courses in different areas of biotechnology, including proteins, molecular biology and gene engineering, experimental genomics, carbohydrates, lipids, and membranes.

Columbian College of Arts and Sciences M.S. Program in Biochemistry: Thesis and Non-Thesis Options

The thesis option of the M.S. program in biochemistry strongly emphasizes carrying out a research project. A large number of faculty are available to provide mentored research for students following this option so that George Washington students can gain research experience in a variety of areas including alcoholism, autism, cancer, gastrointestinal disorders, HIV gene expression, ischemia, and muscle and airway diseases.

In addition, the M.S. program in biochemistry also has a non-thesis option available. There are about 20 to 25 students in this program at any time. Although students typically finish the non-thesis program in two years, some students have completed it in as little as one year.

Colombian College of Arts and Sciences Graduate Admission

The George Washington University Columbian College of Arts and Sciences accepts students in both the fall and spring semesters with application deadlines of August 1, and December 1, respectively. (International applicants have earlier deadlines.)
