Detailed Information

Programs of Study

The Integrated Program in Biomedical Sciences (IPBS), a research-oriented interdisciplinary program, involves faculty members from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) and affiliate faculty members from nearby St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Unlike traditional, department-based graduate programs, the IPBS provides the Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree-seeking student a broad-based, cross-disciplinary training that is essential in today’s competitive research environment. The IPBS consists of seven tracks: cancer and developmental biology; cell biology and biochemistry; genetics, functional genomics, and proteomics; microbial pathogenesis, immunology, and inflammation; molecular, cellular, and systems physiology; molecular therapeutics and cell signaling; and neurosciences. Significantly, faculty members based in several different departments contribute to a single track, thereby enhancing the interdisciplinary training of students. All students apply directly to the IPBS and complete a first-year curriculum composed of courses in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, organ systems and disease, and IPBS Seminar. Students are required to take two elective courses in addition to the core curriculum. Students select a track and laboratory for their dissertation research after completing four rotations in prospective mentor laboratories during the first year. All students must pass an admission-to-candidacy exam before the end of their third year. Completion of the Ph.D. program is anticipated to take four to six years.

Research Facilities

All three participating institutions offer state-of-the-art facilities, and members of the graduate faculty have excellent support from the National Institutes of Health and other recognized funding agencies. The UTHSC campus is home to five Centers of Excellence that contribute laboratory and monetary support to the research enterprise. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is an internationally recognized treatment and research center dedicated to finding cures for childhood catastrophic diseases. Faculty members from the hospital have particular strengths in the areas of cancer, HIV/AIDS, immunodeficiencies, genetic diseases, and hematologic disorders and include a Nobel laureate and several Howard Hughes Investigators. The Veterans Affairs Hospital in Memphis is one of the largest in the country and houses an active research program.

Financial Aid

The College of Graduate Health Sciences covers the cost of tuition for six years. In addition, the College offers one and one-half years of stipend support and health insurance coverage to all incoming IPBS students. After this, students receive an annual stipend and health insurance coverage from their supporting mentor. Currently, stipends and health insurance coverage total $25,320 per year. Outstanding graduates of U.S. institutions are eligible for Alumni Endowment Scholarships that contribute up to $3000 of additional annual support.

Cost of Study

Tuition and fees in 2008–09 were $8968 for two semesters of study for Tennessee residents. Full tuition and fees for out-of-state students were $21,444. Tuition is covered by the College for six years of residence. Books and supplies are estimated at about $1400 per year. The cost of health insurance is approximately $1700 per year for single students, but is covered by the program.

Living and Housing Costs

UTHSC provides single-student housing in the Goodman Residence Hall, which offers one bedroom in a four-bedroom, apartment-style facility. On-campus housing for single students cost $5160 for twelve months in 2008–09. Several apartment complexes are located within walking distance of the campus, and a wide variety of housing options can be found throughout the city. For a single student living off campus, annual living expenses are estimated to be about $22,943.

Student Group

The IPBS enrolls 20–25 students each year. These students add to about 300 other graduate students who join approximately 1,800 medical, dental, pharmacy, nursing, and allied health students on the UTHSC campus.

Student Outcomes

Graduates of the IPBS are well trained for jobs in academia, industry, or government. Recent graduates have gone on to postdoctoral positions at institutions such as Harvard, Rockefeller, Stanford, and Washington Universities; the University of California, San Francisco; Jonas Salk Research Facility; and Scripps Research Institute.

Location

Greater Memphis, with 1.2 million residents, is the educational, cultural, and commercial hub of the mid-South. UTHSC and its affiliated institutions are located in the heart of the South’s largest medical complex. Memphis is synonymous with music but also offers many other cultural opportunities, including excellent art and science museums, the National Civil Rights Museum, a ballet company, a symphony, repertory theaters, and the Memphis Zoo, one of only four U.S. zoos to exhibit giant pandas. Autozone Park, home to the Memphis Redbirds, a Triple-A professional baseball team, is within walking distance of the campus, and the nearby FedExForum hosts the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association. The mild climate invites visitors to historic Beale Street, home of the blues, and to numerous outdoor events, such as the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest and the Memphis in May International Festival, which salutes a different country each year and brings a sampling of its culture to the banks of the Mississippi River.

The University

The University of Tennessee is a system of four campuses throughout the state, the oldest and largest of which was founded in Knoxville in 1794. The campus in Memphis originated in 1911 as a medical college and has grown into one of the largest centers in the country for training health professionals and biomedical scientists.

Applying

The minimum requirements for admission include a baccalaureate degree with a grade point average of 3.0. In addition, official scores on the General Test of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) and three letters of recommendation must be submitted. A minimum score of 1000 is required on the verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE. To be competitive, international applicants should have a GRE score above 1200 and must also demonstrate proficiency in English by a TOEFL score above 213 on the computer-based exam. The deadline is March 1 for submitting an application. Prospective students should fill out the online application found at UTHSC’s Web site and request that the following information be sent directly (not from the student) to the Office of Enrollment Services: three letters of recommendation, official transcripts and proof of degree, and official GRE and TOEFL (if applicable) scores. International applicants must have their transcripts certified by one of the agencies listed at the school’s Web site.
