UC San Diego's Graduate Program in Neurosciences Was Named the Top-Ranking Program in the Country

The Department of Neurosciences is proud to also offer a specialization in computational neuroscience as part of the neuroscience graduate program. The specialization equips students with a broad range of scientific and technical skills that are essential to understand the computational resources of neural systems. The hallmark of UC San Diego's Department of Neurosciences is its faculty and facilities. The faculty comprises numerous award-winning scholars who are experts in their fields and many who have stunning track records for their technological, medical, and scientific breakthroughs. Faculty members include 83 National Academy of Sciences members, four National Medal of Sciences recipients, one winner of the Pulitzer Prize, six fellows of the MacArthur Foundation, and seven Nobel Prize Laureates.
The neurosciences faculty has been carefully assembled; it members come from numerous campus departments, the School of Medicine, and affiliated institutes, including the Veterans Administration Medical Center, the Burnham Institute, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Scripps Research Institute, and the Salk Institute.
UCSD offers its students a multitude of research opportunities, and students often use more than one laboratory for their dissertation research. Funding sources and grants are available in disciplines ranging from biotechnology, confocal microscopy, and flow cytometry to information technology and functional MRI.
To assure a rock-solid grounding in their discipline, all neurosciences students must take six core courses and fulfill their elective requirements. In addition, they attend research rounds for two years, complete three research rotations, and teach for at least one quarter.
