Department of Computer Science Faculty and Graduate Students Conduct Research in State-of-the-Art Research Facilities

The internationally recognized graduate program at the University of Houston's Department of Computer Science is known for its exceptionally high caliber of faculty, leading-edge research programs and state-of-the-art research facilities.

Graduate students pursuing MS and PhD degrees in Computer Science are taught and mentored by leading scholars in their field. Many faculty members are ranked, and selected faculty members have been honored with National Science Foundation Early Career awards, leadership positions in the IEEE Computer Society and the Board of the Computer Research Association.

The esteemed faculty regularly publishes pioneering research and makes presentations at the industry's top international conferences. Faculty and students work side by side at three major research facilities: Computational Physiology Lab, Computational Biomedicine Lab, and HPCTools Lab.

The four main areas of ongoing faculty research at the department's research facilities are Computer Systems, Architecture and Networking; Image Analysis, Signal Analysis, and Computational Algorithms in Life Science; Artificial Intelligence and Data Mining for Science Discovery; and, Theory of Computing.

In the Computational Physiology Lab, a seminal faculty research project pioneered ATHEMOS, a computerized way to collect essential health information from individuals while they perform routine functions on their computer. The breakthrough made international headlines and is recognized as one of the top new technologies destined to make a major impact in the future.

Ground-breaking research is a regular event at the University of Houston's Department of Computer Science. With international credentials from all corners of the world including Europe, Russia, China and India, faculty members maintain their position at the leading edge of computer science research.

Houston, Texas is International Setting for University of Houston's Distinguished Computer Science Graduate School

Graduate students at the University of Houston's Department of Computer Science appreciate the multi-faceted stimulation of the large, international city of Houston, Texas. Houston is ranked as a global metropolis because of the impact its economy has on the world. Houston, Texas enjoys a broad industrial base in energy, manufacturing, aeronautics, transportation and health care sectors and is also a leader in building oilfield equipment. Only New York City is headquarters to more Fortune 500 companies within its city limits.

Computer Science MS or PhD graduate students have the opportunity to work for the University of Houston as research or teaching assistants for the Computer Science Department or other university departments. Others hold part-time or full-time jobs working for companies and medical centers such as the world-famous Texas Medical Center in the Houston metropolitan area.

On campus, an average of 250 graduate students, including approximately 70 PhD students, enjoy the Department of Computer Science's state-of-the-art research labs, access to over 100 workstations and high-performance computing facilities and equipment such as Unix/Linux servers.

Students sharpen research skills working on provocative faculty research projects. Once students are accepted into the Computer Science PhD program, they begin their dissertation research. Recent dissertations have focused on such topics as "Evaluating and Optimizing the Performance of Hierarchical Collective Operations," "Efficient Parallel Computation to Simulate Blood Flow," "Scaling Content-Based Services Using P2P Technology," "Finding Worst-Case Response Times in a Real-Time System," and "Facial Motion Capture Editing by Automated Orthogonal Blendshape Construction and Weight Propagation."

Ethnic Diversity of International Students at UH Computer Science Graduate School Reflects Houston's Diverse Population

The ethnic diversity of international students at UH's Department of Computer Science graduate school reflect the international credentials of the faculty as well as the city of Houston. The faculty hails from the United States, Europe, India, China and Russia and other countries around the world.

Under the guidance of dozens of the world's top computer science scholars, MS and doctoral graduate students learn to open their minds to international issues and conduct research that leads to ground-breaking discoveries with true global impact in such areas as artificial intelligence, computer networks, computer graphics, computer vision, databases, multi-media computing, high-performance computing, real-time systems, scientific computing and visualization, software engineering, biocomputing and bioinformatics, and theory.

The graduate school's master's in science program grants admission to the top 25% of the students that apply each year. Strict admission guidelines secure the University of Houston's international reputation as a pioneering leader in the global computer science industry and attract the cream of the crop of future industry leaders. Graduate students come from the best undergraduate programs in the United States and international students hail from top international universities.
