At UIC, the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science has sixty faculty members and post-doctoral fellows and 175 graduate students, half of them in doctoral programs.

The department offers three MS degree programs and two doctoral degree programs in the areas of Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Computer Science, Mathematics and Information Sciences for Industry, Probability and Statistics, and Mathematics Education. The PhD provides students with the highest level of expertise to conduct independent research. The DA is designed to prepare students for instruction at two- and four-year colleges. It includes study and research in methodology and techniques for successful teaching of college mathematics. The doctoral programs require a thesis which represents a significant contribution to original mathematical research.

The M.S. in Mathematics program is designed to lay the foundation for doctoral work and to prepare students for a career in business, government, or industry. The four areas of concentration including applied mathematics, pure mathematic, statistics, and computer science, provide students with the opportunity to design a program that meets their individual career goals.

The MS in Mathematics and Information Sciences for Industry program offers a core curriculum with group projects focused on industrial problems with practical deliverables. Emphasis is placed on applications in science, engineering, health care, and business.

The MS in the Teaching of Mathematics is designed to strengthen the preparation and background of secondary education and elementary education teachers. The secondary education option includes courses for high school mathematics teachers in addition to a program of study for those seeking state teaching certification. The elementary education option is designed for those already certified and offers an opportunity for them to broaden their understanding of learning and teaching mathematics in grades K-8.
