Programs of Study

The Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies offers a Ph.D. program in clinical psychology and Master of Arts programs in general psychology, school psychology, and mental health counseling. There are also several postgraduate programs.

The Ph.D. program in clinical psychology emphasizes a psychodynamic approach to human behavior and prepares graduates for community practice. The program encompasses research; theory; psychological, biological, and social bases of behavior; and extensive clinical practice in psychodiagnostics and psychotherapy. Four years of full-time study, supervised research, a one-year full-time internship, and a dissertation are required. The clinical psychology program has been accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) since 1957.

The Master of Arts in general psychology enables students to advance their exploration of human personality, psychodynamics, developmental and social psychology, and psychoanalytic theory. It requires the completion of a 36-credit course of study, which can be completed in one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study. Concentrations are offered in preclinical, forensic psychology, or industrial organizational psychology.

The Master of Arts in school psychology is a 72-credit program that can be completed in three years of full-time study or four years of part-time study. The program enables students to practice in a school setting using integrated skills, such as providing comprehensive psychoeducational evaluations and school consultations. The school practice core culminates with a full-time internship in a public school working under the supervision of a certified school psychologist.

The Master of Arts in mental health counseling is a graduate training program designed to help students acquire knowledge and the clinical skills to become competent mental health counselors. The program is designed to help students acquire competency in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders, the ability to facilitate client growth, development, and respect for the ethics and standards of practice endorsed by the mental health counseling profession. The 60-credit curriculum, including an internship, is designed to be completed in two years. The program complies with all standards for state and national accrediting groups. After licensure, mental health counselors may work in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, clinics, and private practice.

The Respecialization Certificate Program in clinical psychology equips doctoral-level psychologists to make a career shift into clinical psychology for community practice. The program focuses on academic work and intensive clinical training, and requires two years of full-time study, supervised clinical practice, and a one-year full-time internship. Graduates of this program earn a Certificate of Respecialization in Clinical Psychology, which is recognized by the American Psychological Association.

Postgraduate programs are available for students who have already earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology or are licensed mental health professionals–psychiatrists, social workers, and psychiatric nurses–who wish to expand the focus of their practice. Adelphi’s postgraduate programs include psychoanalysis and psychotherapy; child, adolescent, and family psychotherapy; group psychotherapy; marriage and couple therapy; and psychodynamic school psychology.
