Programs of Study
The Ruth S. Ammon School of Education at Adelphi University offers a comprehensive array of graduate programs in curriculum and instruction, communication disorders, and health and physical education. Dedicated faculty members, mentoring programs, flexible scheduling, convenient off-campus centers in Hauppauge and Manhattan, extensive partnerships with community school districts and health-care institutions, and a Professional Development Initiative are designed to help candidates achieve their academic and professional goals.
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers in-service and precertification degree programs in the Master of Arts and advanced certificate in early childhood education; the Master of Science and advanced certificate in early childhood special education; the Master of Arts in childhood education; the Master of Arts for elementary teachers, pre-K–6; the Master of Arts in adolescence education (chemistry, earth science, biology, physics, English, mathematics, and social studies); the Master of Science in childhood special education; the Master of Science in literacy; the Master of Arts in art education; the Master of Arts and advanced certificate in TESOL; the Master of Arts, advanced certificate, and certificate in educational leadership and technology; and bilingual education extensions to childhood, adolescence, early childhood special education, special education, literacy, and teacher of students with speech and language disabilities (TSSLD).
The Department of Health Studies, Physical Education, and Human Performance Sciences offers the Master of Arts in exercise science and sports management with specializations in adapted physical education, exercise physiology, and sports management; the Master of Arts in health education; the Master or Arts in physical education; and the Master of Arts and advanced certificate in community health education.
The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders offers the Master of Science in communication disorders with a specialization in speech-language pathology; the Doctor of Arts in communication disorders; and the Doctor of Audiology.
The Ammon School of Education prepares teachers to make a difference. Many of the distinguished faculty members are leaders in their fields. They share their passion for teaching in an environment that fosters creativity and excellence. Students have the opportunity to collaborate on faculty research and presentations at national and international conferences. Adelphi students engage in meaningful partnerships with local schools and service organizations. Through established mentoring programs, students learn from master teachers and clinical experts who set the standards for best practices in teaching. Students get invaluable firsthand experience with mentors and clinicians in community-based service programs.
Research Facilities
The University’s primary research holdings are at Swirbul Library and include 646,720 volumes (including bound periodicals and government publications), 805,545 items in microformats, 32,353 audiovisual items, 1,738 periodical subscriptions, and access to over 27,000 electronic journal titles. Online access is provided to more than 200 research databases.
Research, laboratory, and clinical programs and facilities are offered in all departments of the Ammon School of Education. The Hy Weinberg Center, dedicated to research in communication disorders and clinical and therapeutic services, is equipped with state-of-the-art clinical audiometric instrumentation as well as speech and hearing laboratories for the objective measurement of important parameters of speech and voice. Research conducted in the Human Performance Laboratory is showcased at the Annual Student Research Symposium. Its facilities include a multiple 12-lead ECG/exercise stress system, hydrostatic weighing, pulmonary-function testing, Cybex isokinetic muscle testing, an adult fitness and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program, DEXA, and POLAR Heart Rate Training Center. The Center for Literacy and Learning offers a practicum in assessing and addressing literacy needs, and the new Alice Brown Early Learning Center provides field experience in child development and early childhood curriculum.
Financial Aid
Adelphi University offers financial aid counseling, federal and state aid programs, and scholarship and fellowship programs that include a limited number of graduate assistantships. Programs include the Federal Stafford Student Loan; Federal Work-Study Program; Adelphi’s Pathways to Teaching, scholarships for students seeking teacher certification in secondary mathematics and science that are funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education; the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP); New York State Scholarship Programs; Vietnam and Persian Gulf Veterans Tuition Awards; and Regents Professional Opportunity Scholarships. Students with outstanding undergraduate or graduate records in education can apply for paid graduate internships in adolescent education.
Cost of Study
For the 2008–09 academic year, the tuition rate is $830 per credit. Full-time tuition for the communication disorders program is $28,250 per year ($860 per credit). University fees ranged from $200 to $400 per semester.

Living and Housing Costs
Living and housing costs vary considerably depending on personal circumstances. Most graduate students in the Ammon School of Education attend on a part-time basis and live off campus in established households. Information on residence hall fees can be found on the University’s Web site.
Location
Located in historic Garden City, New York, 45 minutes from Manhattan and 20 minutes from Queens, Adelphi’s 75-acre suburban campus is known for the beauty of its landscape and architecture. The campus is a short walk from the Long Island Rail Road and is convenient to New York’s major airports and several major highways. Off-campus centers are located in Manhattan, Hauppauge, and Poughkeepsie.
