Programs of Study
Argosy University, Twin Cities, offers the Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in clinical psychology, forensic psychology, and marriage and family therapy; the Doctor of Marriage and Family Therapy (D.M.F.T.); the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree in organizational leadership; and the Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree in clinical psychology. Students completing a program may wish to become licensed professionals. Argosy University, Twin Cities does not guarantee third-party certification/licensure. Outside agencies control the requirements for taking and passing certification/licensing exams and are subject to change without notice to Argosy University, Twin Cities.
The M.A. in Clinical Psychology program is designed to prepare students with the clinical knowledge and skills required to serve the mental health needs of individuals and groups. Students develop proficiency in clinical observation, assessment, appropriate intervention, and evaluation. The program emphasizes a practitioner-oriented philosophy and integrates applied theory, research, and field experience. It is designed for students who are interested in a terminal degree and practice as a master’s-level clinician, or for students planning to transfer to the Psy.D. program.
The M.A. in Forensic Psychology program is designed to provide course work in forensic psychology for application to law enforcement, legal and organizational consultation, and program analysis. The program is designed to meet growing needs of the legal and criminal justice systems for professional counseling within victim assistance programs, probation and parole offices, court-mandated treatment programs, jails, and prisons. With the exception of the practicum component, courses are offered on weekends, allowing students to continue full-time employment while enrolled in this program.
The M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy program is designed to develop the theoretical and clinical elements required to provide effective counseling to individuals, couples, families, and groups. The program introduces basic counseling skills that incorporate foundations of applied psychology and systems theory into the development of appropriate clinical relationships. Course work in addiction studies and substance-abuse counseling prepares students to work with families affected by this burgeoning problem. An optional concentration in forensic counseling is available. Marriage and family therapy is recognized by the Public Health Service Act as one of the five core mental health professions, and the National Institute of Mental Health accepts marriage and family therapists as qualified mental health professionals. The program is offered through weekend courses to allow concurrent employment.
The Doctor of Marriage and Family Therapy is a practice-oriented degree for licensed marriage and family therapists or professionals who can meet state requirements for licensure as a marriage and family therapist (meeting the Commission on Accreditation of Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) criteria for clinical practice prior to admission). The program seeks to build upon students’ prior learning and professional experience by expanding and deepening their knowledge of human development, family dynamics, systemic thinking, interactional theories, traditional and contemporary marriage and family therapy theories and practices, and the cultural contexts within which these are embedded.
The Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership program is designed for working professionals who wish to develop the knowledge and skills required to hold leadership positions in complex organizations. The program focuses on transformational leadership skills in addition to managerial attributes. This approach prepares students for such strategic challenges as increasing globalization, changing economies, societal shifts, and individual-organizational relationships.
The Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology program is designed to prepare students to deliver basic diagnostic and therapeutic services to diverse populations, including individuals, groups, and families. By integrating theory, training, research, and practice, students develop and apply the clinical skills of observation, assessment, intervention, and evaluation. Optional concentrations are available in child and family psychology, forensic psychology, health psychology, marriage/couple and family therapy, or neuropsychology. The program prepares graduates for positions in traditional settings, including, but not limited to, independent practice, mental health centers, hospitals, medical centers, and managed-care systems. Graduates are encouraged to utilize clinical skills in innovative ways to become more competitive. Eventual positions may include consulting in various corporate, governmental, academic, multimedia, law, scientific, marketing, and industrial settings. The Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology program at Argosy University, Twin Cities, is accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association (APA) (750 First Street, N.E., Washington, D.C. 20002-4242, 202-336-5510).
Research Facilities
Argosy University libraries provide curriculum support and educational resources, including current text materials, diagnostic training documents, reference materials and databases, journals and dissertations, and major and current titles in program areas. There is an online public-access catalog of library resources available throughout the Argosy University system. Students have remote access to the campus library database, enabling them to study and conduct research at home. Academic databases offer dissertation abstracts, academic journals, and professional periodicals. All library computers are Internet accessible. Software applications include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SPSS, and various test-scoring programs.
