Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing Clinical Settings
The uniqueness of the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing lies in the wide variety of clinical programs in which students work. Emory University provides access to more than two hundred diverse clinical sites to support its dynamic, relevant educational opportunities.
Students begin their clinical nursing in the Charles F. and Peggy Evans Center for Caring Skills Lab, working with patient-simulator mannequins, followed by experience in acute care hospitals. The Evans Center for Caring Skills is a simulation lab used to promote quality patient care and safety. This state-of-the-art facility is equipped with two human patient simulator mannequins, one obstetrical birthing simulator, one neonatal simulator, and multiple complete care dolls, which are all used to provide a variety of educational experiences for the novice to the expert clinician.
Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing International Academic Exchange
Through its mission to enhance cross-cultural understanding through scholarly partnerships, this Georgia nursing school, along with the Lillian Carter Center for International Nursing and the Emory International Student Nurses Association, participates in an exchange program with Yonsei University in South Korea and the University of Alberta in Canada to help create forums for exploring issues of the nursing workforce worldwide, and for increasing access to training and education.
The Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, along with the Emory University School of Medicine, has piloted an interdisciplinary team training program to teach students the importance of improving overall patient outcomes and safety. This approach is termed "crisis resource management" and has been adapted from the aviation industry to fit the growing needs of the medical field.
Emory University Lillian Carter Center for International Nursing
Named after President Jimmy Carter's mother, the Lillian Carter Center for International Nursing (LCCIN) works to improve the health of vulnerable people through education, advocacy, and research, and it has helped thousands in impoverished areas gain access to adequate health care. An example of the work done through the LCCIN is the Alternative Spring Break program, in which nursing school students and faculty work with the organization Missionaries of the Poor to provide support and care to vulnerable people in Jamaica and the Bahamas Ministry of Health.
Along with working internationally on health care-related projects, the center also hosts key global nursing leadership activities, including a biennial Global Government Health Partners conference that attracts senior government health leaders from around the world. One hundred and ten countries were represented at the 2006 conference. Emory University's Lillian Carter Center also is the secretariat for the Government Chief Nursing Officers network and provides follow up and technical assistance to those countries.
