Overview

The Cyprus International Institute and the Harvard School of Public Health Collaborate on Research and Training

The Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and the government of Cyprus have established an international research, education, and technology initiative for the environment and public health to address key environmental issues in Cyprus and the Mediterranean region. Towards this end, two new research and training entities have been created: the Cyprus International Institute (CII) for the Environment and Public Health located in Nicosia, Cyprus, and the Harvard School of Public Health-Cyprus Program (HCP) located in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

The Cyprus International Institute for the Environment and Public Health enhances the skills and overall capacity of researchers in Cyprus to address present and future societal needs of Cyprus and the region. In addition, the institute attracts scientists from Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the U.S. who come to Cyprus for training, research, and conferences.

Alternatively, the Harvard School of Public Health's program in Boston, Massachusetts, brings qualified students from Cyprus and the region to study, train, and earn a degree at HSPH, and collaborates with the Cyprus International Institute for the Environment and Public Health to develop and execute in-depth research.

Environmental and Public Health Postgraduate Program

The postgraduate program in Cyprus encompasses over 51 course credits taught over a 12-month period (September through August). In an effort to recruit outstanding students and maintain high quality training, fewer than 20 students are admitted per academic year.

Graduates of the program acquire skills that will prepare them for leadership positions in governmental and international organizations, in consulting, public service, private industry, and research. They will be proficient in the full range of environmental health and public health protection practices and research. Graduates will also be prepared for further studies leading to doctorate degrees at the Harvard School of Public Health as well as at other institutions.

The official language of the program is English. A bachelor's or higher-level degree is required and applicants must have knowledge of calculus, chemistry, and biology. Formal acceptance to the program will be offered by the School of Health Sciences of the Cyprus University of Technology.

The tuition for the master's degree program is 6,000 Euros. The estimated cost of living for international students is approximately 1,000 Euro per month. CII will provide assistance in finding off-campus housing for students upon admission.

Creating a Global Laboratory

By becoming an international center in environment and public health research and education, this new initiative will generate knowledge and technology that can be shared with countries and regions around the world facing similar environmental challenges.

The Cyprus International Institute for the Environment and Public Health is culturally-rich and ideally situated at the crossroads between East and West, North and South. Cyprus offers an ideal site for a new international research institute, and the Republic of Cyprus serves as a regional meeting ground for environment and public health research and training.

The Harvard School of Public Health's initiative provides a rich exchange of ideas between Harvard faculty and resources with the Cyprus region's cadre of scientists, professionals, and government officials, as well as with the general public.

Research and Outreach Opportunities with CII and HSPH

Through educational programs in Cyprus and the education of graduate students from the region in the U.S. at the Harvard School of Public Health, the initiative trains a new era of scientists and specialists who will use their expertise to protect the environment and safeguard health.

The Harvard School of Public Health's initiative provides top-quality education and training in environmental, occupational, and public health to students, scholars, and mid-career professionals. Short courses and a world-class, one-year postgraduate program in environmental health are offered in Cyprus. The Harvard School of Public Health-Cyprus Endowment has been established to provide scholarships for master's and doctoral students in the Boston program, as well as students in post-doctoral research training at HSPH.

The initiative disseminates important information on the environment and health to professional and lay audiences in the region as well as to audiences which may have little or no scientific background through international and regional conferences, guest lectures at universities and public organizations, professional career development activities in the environment and public health for professionals, informative events for lay audiences, and regular communication through the media and via the Internet.
