Kent, Ohio is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area, but has a longstanding and proud small-town tradition and identity. Residents are called "Kenties," and the city nickname is "The Tree City," as the area is home to the nationally-known Davey Tree Company. Kent is a proud city with a fascinating mixture of old and new, a diverse population, and an historic downtown area.
Kent's park system includes 15 parks and preserves, the largest of which is the Fred Fuller Park slightly south of downtown. Kent is also the home of the Tom S. Cooperrider-Kent Bog State Nature Preserve, at the southern end of the town, one of the most intact bog fields in Ohio. In keeping with its proud "Tree City" tradition, Kent boasts the southernmost and largest expanse of tamarack trees in the continental U.S.
The town hosts many sporting and recreational events, including the Pedal To Make A Difference Bike-a-Thon that raises money for cerebral palsy research and the Bike & Hike-a-Thon, which begins and ends at the Fred Fuller Park. Bike trails criss-cross the region and are popular with all ages, as is the summer Kent Heritage Festival. The festival features entertainment, a classic auto show, arts and crafts, food, and pony rides for the children. The town is proud to have museums, galleries, and cultural events out of all proportion to its modest size, and the Kent Chamber of Commerce and the town's merchants work with the diverse population to promote a tolerant, progressive community.

Through its highly talented, award-winning faculty, the School of Biomedical Sciences at Kent State University demonstrates a firm commitment to excellence in both teaching and research.
