School of Business Montclair State University, Montclair, New Jersey
Detailed InformationPrograms of StudyThe goal of the Montclair State University (MSU) M.B.A. program is to combine sound business concepts with practical applications, to give students the skills to be competitive and effective managers in a global economy. This blend of theory and practice builds a strong foundation for immediate, as well as long-term professional growth. M.B.A. courses have a maximum enrollment of 25 students, and students and alumni cite the seminar-style classes and friendly, informal atmosphere as major strengths of the program, facilitating both learning and networking. Over 80 percent of the students are working professionals, and each individual has the opportunity to shape the M.B.A. experience.
Concentrations are available in accounting, finance, international business, management, management information systems, and marketing. The curriculum consists of 48 credits, but this may be reduced by up to 15 credits in the core through prior academic course work, challenge exams, and/or graduate transfer credits. All advanced courses must be completed at MSU. Courses are held on weeknights or Saturdays; this M.B.A. is designed to accommodate busy professionals who work full-time. There is also a Saturday-only accelerated cohort program, which allows completion of the M.B.A. in just two years; classes are held at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, New Jersey. Structured in a similar manner to an executive M.B.A. program, the Montclair State M.B.A. at Brookdale is for those who prefer a weekend course schedule and can manage the rapid pace of instruction.
The M.S. in chemistry/M.B.A. dual-degree program is designed for individuals with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry or biochemistry who wish to advance their careers in the local chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
The M.S. in accounting is for individuals with a bachelor’s degree in accounting who wish to sit for the CPA examination in New Jersey and prefer a specialized curriculum of accounting, taxation, and law courses. Applicants with other undergraduate majors or concentrations can meet the educational requirements for the CPA exam with the M.B.A. concentration in accounting.
Post-M.B.A. certificates are also available in accounting, finance, international business, management, management information systems, and marketing. Research FacilitiesThe Harry A. Sprague Library owns more than 1.5 million items, including 410,000 books, 2,600 periodical subscriptions, 65,000 government documents, and more than a million nonprint media. The library provides wireless access to the MSU computer network, business and other research databases, and the Internet; M.B.A. students have access to a study room for graduate student and faculty use only. The School of Business provides access to additional business databases and resources, and all instructional spaces are wireless enabled. Financial AidSeveral kinds of financial aid sources are available to graduate students who meet all admission requirements, including graduate assistantships and graduate scholarships. Graduate assistants receive remission of tuition and University-wide fees for up to 24 graduate credits per academic year and a stipend for the full ten-month appointment. Montclair offers a number of scholarship opportunities to full-time and part-time students; most notably, the Saul and Adelaide Goldfarb Graduate Scholarship ranges from $1500 to $7000 per year. Cost of StudyTuition is $585 per credit for New Jersey residents and $805 per credit for out-of-state residents on the main campus; for the Saturday-only Brookdale M.B.A., tuition is $635 per credit for New Jersey residents and $855 per credit for out-of-state residents. Required fees are $133 per credit. The cost of books and supplies varies by course load. Living and Housing CostsCampus housing is extremely limited, although graduate students are eligible to apply for it. Cost is approximately $9820 for a nine-month period. Optional summer housing is available for about $2000 for three months. Housing is also available off-campus in the Montclair area. Student GroupThere are more than 350 M.B.A. students; 40 percent are women, and more than 80 percent attend classes on a part-time basis while working full-time. Most full-time students are international (about 20 percent of the total enrollment), and 15 percent of students entering the program already hold another graduate degree. Montclair State M.B.A. students have diverse professional backgrounds in a wide range of industries across the region, especially in financial services, consumer products and services, health care, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and biotechnology.
