Overview

A Lifelong Commitment to Teaching and Learning Guides the School of Education

The focus of Pace University School of Education graduate programs is to prepare students to excel as classroom teachers; grade 1-12 administrators; and specialists in literacy, education technology, and teachers of students with disabilities.

Part of the mission of the School of Education is a dedication to a lifetime spent teaching and learning, and the graduate programs in education at Pace University reflect a further commitment to properly preparing reflective educational practitioners who will spend their careers promoting justice, instilling knowledge and pride in their students, enabling students to successfully learn, and creating classrooms where an atmosphere of caring is fostered.

To achieve this goal, the Pace School of Education has instituted a rigorous course of study for all degree and certification programs. Challenging academic coursework is designed to prepare students for field-based work and students are imparted the knowledge, disposition, and communication skills necessary to use technological resources to enhance learning opportunities for students, use effective assessment techniques, communicate effectively with diverse student populations and understand the connection between theory and practice.

Finally, the School of Education instills in graduates a lifelong commitment to scholarship and, in turn, the development of that scholarship to serve teachers, administrators, and students and to inform the practice of graduates.

A Foundation of Knowledge and Real-World Experience Makes Better Teachers

The Master of Science in Education in Educational Leadership is a program designed to provide future administrators with a sound foundation of knowledge and experience for making thoughtful decisions for schools and other educational institutions. Experienced teachers who complete the program are eligible for the New York State School Based Leader (SBL) certification.

Three additional M.S.Ed. programs are also offered, in the fields of educational technology, literacy, and special education. These programs are designed for individuals holding a baccalaureate degree in education and/or those holding provisional, initial, or permanent certification as elementary or secondary school teachers.

The educational technology program offers a hands-on format where teachers learn to use technology tools to enhance instruction. The program prepares candidates to teach with and about technology and to support colleagues in their use of education technologies. Program candidates are not required to hold a teaching certificate upon entry into the program and may come with or without a background in technology or education. Candidates gain competencies stipulated by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and qualify for New York State's Educational Technology Specialist certificate.

The literacy program offers innovative collaboration for classroom and reading teachers to serve the varying needs, interests, and skills of students at the elementary and secondary level. The special education program focuses on inclusionary practices and techniques, studying assessment, support, and education of students with disabilities.

Pursuing a Career in Education via Excellence in Educational Technology

The Pace University School of Education Master of Science in Teaching program is an intensive program for career changers and college graduates who want to teach but do not have an undergraduate degree in education.

Students are challenged to consider the traditional classroom environment and to understand how existing and developing technologies can be implemented to improve upon traditional practices. Also emphasized are the different learning methods typically exhibited by students in order for program graduates to tailor their own teaching methodologies to accommodate various learning styles.

Those enrolling in the M.S.T. program can choose between the childhood track (grades 1-6) or the adolescent track (grades 7-12) and further select a teaching specialty subject. Options include biology, business education, chemistry, earth science, English, languages, mathematics, physics, social science, and the visual arts.

In order to facilitate the schedules of students who attend classes while working, the M.S.T. programs can be completed on a part-time or full-time basis, and classes are scheduled in the evenings.

Students Advance Their Careers with Pace School of Education Certificates

The Pace University School of Education also offers advanced certificates for those seeking to further their expertise and future credentials. Certificate programs offer students small class sizes and the same highly-dedicated faculty that regularly instruct graduate-level courses. Theory-based coursework emphasizes both professional growth and scholarship while further preparing candidates for their careers in education. Classes are regularly offered in the evening to facilitate those with full-time work schedules.
