Quinnipiac University's nationally recognized physician assistant master's program provides training for the most sought-after profession in health care today. A physician assistant is capable of performing diagnostic studies, assisting in emergency medicine, managing therapeutic plans, and taking patient's histories. They work in private practice, hospitals, extended care facilities, and other healthcare venues alongside physicians.

Already during their first year, students are paired with a graduate physician assistant or physician one day each week so they can apply their growing knowledge while caring for patients. The 60-credit curriculum involves students in an extensive network of fieldwork experiences in hospitals, medical centers, extended care facilities, and nursing homes. The pioneering program is a response to the healthcare industry's increasing demand for pathologists' assistants. The fully accredited, six-semester curriculum reflects a collaborative partnership with the Veterans Administration Medical Center in West Haven, Connecticut, and other local and regional hospitals.

Classroom study and clinical training prepares students to carry out increasingly sophisticated procedures, examinations, and determinations in laboratories and medical research centers. During the first three semesters, students focus on their course work and attend weekly conferences at the V.A. Medical Center in West Haven. The conferences orient them to hospital lab settings and prepare them for intensive clinical training the following year. When not attending classes or working with tutors, students are trainees in the V.A. laboratories and other partnering hospitals for practical training in anatomic pathology.

The 35¿38 credit curriculum is structured so that students can work in a particular specialty or move among related medical laboratory sciences.

Quinnipiac's 47-credit cardiovascular perfusion program is one of only eight graduate-level programs in the nation. The program's academic course work and rigorous clinical and lab work prepare candidates for the high-level responsibilities of the life and death situations they will face. The perfusionist consults the physician in the selection of equipment and techniques to be used during extracorporeal circulation. During cardiopulmonary bypass, the perfusionist may administer blood products, anesthetic agents, or drugs through the extracorporeal circuit.

The cardiovascular perfusion curriculum gives graduate students well-rounded didactic, laboratory, and clinical experience. During the program's clinical phase, which runs for three consecutive semesters, students rotate through a variety of clinical sites to assure adequate exposure to a wide variety of equipment and procedures.
