Barry University Provides a Private Educational Environment with Access to Surrounding Miami and Florida Attractions

Barry University is a private Catholic institution, and is known for offering academic excellence in the Dominican foundation since 1940. Located in Miami, Florida, more than 100 undergraduate degree programs offering both B.S. and B.A. options may be pursued in the area's popular subtropical climate of the Miami Shores.

Several student services provide continual advising and counseling throughout a student's academic career at Barry. Student affairs, campus ministries, and career services enable students to pursue a well-rounded education that serves the spirit, body, and mind.

When taking time away from formal studies and classroom instruction is possible, students frequent the area beaches and relax, ride bikes, and even visit local theme parks and zoos for extracurricular entertainment. The vast nightlife available in Miami allows students to get away for the evening and enjoy a night on the town and fine dining if they choose.

Designer shopping, live entertainment, and even several day trips to explore the Everglades, wildlife retreats, and other attractions in Florida occupy many students during vacations and long weekends away from classes.

Special Barry Majors Lead to Five-Year B.S. to M.S. Programs, Unique Careers in Biology, and Educator Endorsements

BU offers both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in a variety of focus areas. B.A. degrees may be earned in advertising, art, broadcast communication and communication studies, English, general studies, history, international studies, music, philosophy, photography, pre-law, public relations, Spanish, theater, and theology.

Art students enjoy a curriculum including art history, ceramics, graphic design, painting, and drawing areas of focus. English majors may pursue literature or professional writing. A unique program is the photography major, which allows students to focus on either creative photography, or biomedical and forensic applications of the skill. Theater majors focus on acting, dance, and technical theater studies, and Spanish majors may choose to study the language, literature, translation, and interpretation within this area.

Barry University's Bachelor of Science degree offerings include accounting, athletic training, biology, cardiovascular perfusion, chemistry, computer information sciences, computer science, criminology, elementary education, exercise science, finance, information technology, international business, management, marketing, mathematical sciences, medical technology, physical education, political sciences, psychology, sociology, and sport management. Within these majors, special areas of focus cater to students and their individual interests.

Athletic training students may specialize in pre-medicine or pre-physical therapy, choosing a track of studies that leads to a five-year B.S. to master's degree program. Biology majors may focus on areas of general biology, marine biology, or pre-professional biological studies such as pre-medicine, pre-veterinary, and pre-dental. Exercise science majors may also choose a five-year B.S. to M.S. program or pre-medical or pre-physical therapy concentration.

Students enrolled in mathematical sciences can focus on computational, general mathematics, statistics, or actuarial science. Physical education majors are prepared for K-12 grades, and psychology majors may pursue careers in either industrial or organizational applications of the field.

A five-year B.S. to M.S. track is also available for sport management students, who can focus on the diving or golf industry as well. Barry's business programs may also lead students on a five-year seamless track from a bachelor's to master's degree.

Other special majors lead some students to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Fine Arts, Music, and Social Work. Fine arts majors may concentrate on art or photography, and music majors may focus on instrumental performance, sacred music, voice, opera, or musical theater specializations.

Some students who enroll at Barry University already have an associate's degree and certification in medical laboratory technology. If this is the case, the B.S. program in clinical biology can advance a student's career in this field or as a histotechnician, nuclear medicine technician, or ultrasound and respiratory technician.

In addition, the Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Endorsement is provided for educators and administrators who wish to work with students displaying evidence of advanced abilities and skills. The State of Florida has approved this program, which includes courses such as English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Graduates earn an ESE certification and ESOL endorsement for grades K-12, and this program may be added to the English major's curriculum.
