Overview
Music Students at the Boston Conservatory Enjoy Individualized Attention in Small Classes
Music students work with artist faculty members and teachers dedicated to developing students' musical abilities to their utmost potential. The scale of the program is purposefully small and designed to give students individual attention. With personalized one-on-one training, small class sizes, master classes, guest artists, special events, and countless cultural activities available throughout Boston, the Boston Conservatory fully immerses students in their craft.
Music students have abundant and varied opportunities to perform--as soloists, as orchestra and ensemble players, as members of chamber groups and chorales, and in recitals and opera productions. Also, because of the conservatory's multi-disciplinary offerings in music, dance, and theater, there is ample opportunity for cross-collaboration between composers, musicians, and dancers. In fact, many instrumentalists choose The Boston Conservatory specifically for the opportunity to perform in a symphonic orchestra one month, a ballet orchestra the next, and a Broadway-style pit band after that.
The Boston Conservatory Theater Program Consistently Produces Triple Threat Graduates
The Boston Conservatory theater program is known across the country as one of the top musical theater training grounds. The curriculum combines acting, voice, and dance to produce "triple threat" graduates. Performance opportunities range from in-class and studio work to fully-staged productions, directed by faculty members or guest directors.
The conservatory has an open, professional casting policy to ensure that roles are filled by the most qualified persons. Technical and stagecraft experience is provided, and production assistance is required for freshmen during major runs. Small-scale productions are also offered throughout the year, directed by faculty members, graduate students, and senior directors.
Many alumni are on Broadway in Rock of Ages, South Pacific, Memphis, and The Little Mermaid; in national tours of Wicked, Beauty and the Beast, and Spring Awakening; on television in Law and Order, Gossip Girl, and The Young and the Restless; and as producers, directors, and creators of Broadway, touring, and television productions such as Forbidden Broadway and MADTV.
The Dance Program at the Boston Conservatory is Among the Most Respected in the Nation
The Boston Conservatory was the first college in the nation to have an integrated department of ballet and modern dance. Additionally, the conservatory offers classes in hip hop, jazz, musical theater, and cultural dance styles, as well as literature, dance repertory, dance history, Gyrokinesis, Pilates, Alexander technique, nutrition, and anatomy. To support the dancer, seminars in health and wellness are scheduled throughout the academic year.
Performance opportunities include studio and main stage concerts of both reconstructed works and premieres of new works choreographed by artist faculty members or guest artists commissioned by the school. Alumni apply these experiences to careers in renowned dance companies such as the Boston Ballet, Alvin Ailey, Martha Graham, and Limon Dance Company.
Membership in the Pro-Arts Consortium and an Esteemed Faculty Creates a Supportive Environment for Students
Faculty members from all divisions represent some of the most prestigious in their fields. Their artistry and professional qualifications offer students a full range of technical skills and provide a supportive environment where students succeed.
As a member of the Pro-Arts Consortium, The Boston Conservatory offers its students cross-registration courses at five area colleges (Emerson, Berklee, School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Massachusetts College of Art, and Boston Architectural Center).
On-campus housing is provided for freshmen and is available to upperclassmen and graduates on a space-available basis. Conservatory housing consists of brownstone-style living accommodations close to the main training and rehearsal buildings. Boston offers a variety of off-campus housing options, all within easy access of the school by public transportation.
