The College and Its Mission
Brown Mackie College–Akron is one of over twenty locations in the Brown Mackie College family of schools (http://www.brownmackie.edu), which is dedicated to providing educational programs that prepare students to pursue entry-level positions in a competitive, rapidly-changing workplace. Brown Mackie College schools offer bachelor's degree, associate degree, certificate, and diploma programs in health sciences, business, information technology, legal studies, and design to over 14,000 students in the Midwest, Southeastern, and Southwestern United States.
The College was founded in Cincinnati, Ohio, in February 1927, as a traditional business college. In March 1980, the College added a branch campus in Akron, Ohio. The College outgrew this space and relocated to its current address in January 2007.
Brown Mackie College–Akron is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) to award associate degrees and diplomas. The Accrediting Council for Independent College and Schools is listed as a nationally recognized accrediting agency by the United States Department of Education and is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. The Brown Mackie College–Akron Associate of Applied Science degree in medical assisting is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (http://www.caahep.org) upon recommendation of the Curriculum Review Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants Endowment (AAMAE).
The occupational therapy assistant program has applied for accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 4720 Montgomery Lane, P.O. Box 31220, Bethesda, Maryland 20824; 301-652-AOTA.
The Practical Nursing diploma is accredited by the Ohio Board of Nursing (OBN), 17 South High Street, Suite 400, Columbus, Ohio 43215-7410; 330-722-7670.

Academic Programs
Brown Mackie College–Akron provides higher education to traditional and nontraditional students through associate degree and diploma programs that can assist them in enhancing their career opportunities, broadening their perspectives through appropriate general education courses, thinking independently and critically, and improving problem-solving abilities.
Each College quarter comprises twelve weeks. Associate degree programs require a minimum of eight quarters to complete. Programs are offered on a year-round basis, providing students with the ability to work uninterrupted toward their degree. The College offers all programs in a unique One Course a Month schedule. This schedule allows students to focus studies on only one course for four weeks. This schedule has proven convenient for students with multiple obligations such as jobs and family.
Associate Degree Programs: The Associate of Applied Business degree (96 credits) is awarded in accounting technology, business management, criminal justice, office management, and paralegal. The Associate of Applied Science degree (96 credits) is awarded in database technology, early childhood education, health-care administration, information technology, medical assisting, occupational therapy assistant (100 credits), pharmacy technology, and surgical technology.
Diploma Programs: The College also offers diploma programs (48 credits) in accounting, business, computer software applications, criminal justice, medical assistant studies, medical coding and billing, and paralegal assistant, as well as the practical nursing diploma, which requires 76 credit hours.
Costs
Tuition for the 2009–10 academic year is $235 per credit hour for all programs except the practical nursing program, which is $295 per credit hour and the surgical technology program, which is $275 per credit hour. The cost of textbooks and other instructional materials varies by program.
Financial Aid
Financial aid is available to those who qualify. The College maintains a full-time staff of financial aid professionals to assist qualified students in obtaining financial assistance. The College participates in several student aid programs. Forms of financial aid available through federal resources include the Federal Pell Grant Program, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) Program, Federal Work-Study Program, Federal Perkins Loan Program, Federal Stafford Student Loan Program (subsidized and unsubsidized), and the Federal PLUS Loan Program. Through the Ohio Instructional Grant (OIG) program, Ohio residents enrolled in a degree program may receive an award to apply to their tuition costs. The amount of the award varies according to family income and other determining factors. Eligible students may also apply for veterans’ educational benefits. Students with physical or mental disabilities that are a handicap to employment may be eligible for training services through the state Agency for Vocational Rehabilitation. For further information, students should contact the College Student Financial Services Office.
Each year, the College makes available scholarships of $1000 each to qualifying seniors from area high schools. Only one scholarship is awarded per high school. In order to qualify, a senior must be graduating from a participating high school, maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0, and submit a brief essay. The student’s extracurricular activities and community service are also considered. The President’s Scholarship is available only to students enrolling in one of the College’s degree programs. Students awarded the scholarship must enroll at Brown Mackie College–Akron between June and September immediately following their high school graduation. Applications for these scholarships can be obtained from the guidance departments of participating high schools. These applications must be completed and returned to the College by March 31.

Faculty
There are 25 full-time and 61 part-time faculty members. The student-faculty ratio is 17:1.
Facilities and Resources
Brown Mackie College–Akron provides media presentation rooms for special instructional needs, libraries that provide instructional resources and academic support for both faculty members and students, and qualified and experienced faculty members who are committed to the academic and technical preparation of their students. The College is nonresidential; students who are unable to commute daily from their homes may request assistance from the Office of Admissions in locating off-campus housing. The College is accessible by public transportation and provides ample parking, available at no charge.
Location
The College is located at 755 White Pond Drive in Akron, Ohio. For added convenience, the College also operates a downtown learning site located at 388 South Main Street in Akron.
Admission Requirements
Each applicant for admission is assigned an Assistant Director of Admissions who directs the applicant through the steps of the admissions process, providing information on curriculum, policies, procedures, and services and assisting the applicant in setting necessary appointments and interviews.
To qualify for admission, each applicant must provide documentation of graduation from an accredited high school or from a state-approved secondary education curriculum or provide official documentation of high school graduation equivalency. All transcripts become the property of the College. Admission to the College is based upon the applicant’s meeting the stated requirements, a review of the applicant’s previous education records, and a review of the applicant’s career interests. If previous academic records indicate that the College’s education and training would not benefit the applicant, the College reserves the right to advise the applicant not to enroll. Special requirements for enrollment into certain programs are discussed in the descriptions of those programs.
