The Carson-Newman (C-N) experience is defined by the college's mission to help students grow as educated leaders and servants of the community by integrating faith and learning within a caring atmosphere. It is an experience that is shared by people from all walks of life and from all corners of the world. It is an experience of both exploration and transformation, where students' personal goals are formed to help them make not only a living, but also a life. Carson-Newman's students and faculty are enthusiastic about the C-N experience, and they are willing to share their experiences with those who are interested in the college. As they think about what college they would like to attend, students should consider the kinds of relationships they would like to have with their professors. Carson-Newman college is an excellent choice for students who want personal relationships with faculty members, where faculty often encourage students to make presentations at national conferences, or write letters of recommendation for graduate, medical, or law school.
One of the most distinctive features of Carson-Newman is that it is a Christian liberal arts college. Students at C-N gain a broad background with which to utilize their knowledge and practice their Christianity. They learn how faith enhances their academic and vocational pursuits.
Professors enjoy teaching at Carson-Newman because they have the freedom to develop professionally and personally as they wish. C-N faculty members are known for their interaction with students outside of class, often leading campus clubs and travel courses. Christine Dalton, assistant professor of chemistry, enjoys advising the Chemistry Club and inviting students for social evenings at her house to play games and share snacks. Like all faculty members, she serves as an academic advisor, guiding students through their four years of course selection, career preparation, and even internships.
The Carson-Newman faculty gets students actively involved in the learning process. In Christine Dalton's chemistry classes, for example, students learn concepts together in small groups while playing the roles of manager, record-keeper, strategy person, and spokesperson. When students are actively engaged, they retain the knowledge longer and develop important skills like communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and problem solving.
Carson-Newman students have many opportunities to enrich their education, both on- and off-campus. A small class size offers many unique opportunities for professors and students to conduct research side by side. Such interaction is an example of the C-N faculty and student relationship, and is an important part of the Carson-Newman experience.
Respected Christian College Recruits Motivated Students Seeking to Transform Their Aspirations into Realities
In order to make the college experience as rewarding as possible, it is important for high school graduates and transfer students to find an academic environment that suits their individual personalities. This is a two-way process. While some colleges try to recruit as many applicants as possible with no regard for whether the applicants would be happy at their school, this can result in unhappy students and underperforming colleges. That's why Carson-Newman College works to find students who will be able to reach their full potential and enjoy a rewarding college experience.
Carson-Newman College is looking for applicants who demonstrate academic preparation and who possess an appreciation of and sensitivity to a Christian education and a liberal arts curriculum. Carson-Newman accepts applications for freshman and transfer admission for each term of enrollment (fall, spring, and summer). Applicants may submit an application for admission online, and unlike at many colleges, Carson-Newman's online application process is free of charge. Along with the application, applicants must submit official transcripts and test scores. Since admission decisions are made on a rolling basis, students are notified of acceptance within two weeks of receipt of all required documents.
