Marshall Community College Has an Historic Campus with Local Ties, and the Community Is Part of Student Life

MCTC was originally founded as part of Marshall University, and currently operates within three main buildings on the Marshall campus. This community college has approximately 2,500 undergraduate students, 67 percent of whom are full-time. Marshall College is preferred among students looking for educational programs that allow them to start working in their desired fields as soon as possible.

Several two-year associate degree and certificate programs are offered at the community college, and students enjoy the surrounding city of Huntington as part of their complete and continued learning experience. Marshall Community College aims to provide varied educational opportunities and working knowledge within their offered programs to students who will be able to contribute to the continued development of the surrounding community.

Huntington is a large town that frequently attracts local college students and travelers searching for a wide range of attractions and entertainment choices. Local art museums and exhibits, unique shopping, and locally-owned dining venues allow for exploring the surroundings during weekends and enjoying the city life while pursuing an education. It is important that students have balanced lives, and tend to their hearts and souls as well as to their minds. On campus and off, opportunities abound.

A Wide Variety of Health Occupations and Technical Studies Are Available in Both Degree and Certificate Programs

Some of the most popular degree programs available at MCTC include medical assistance, health information technology, radiological technology, respiratory therapy, legal assistance, machinist technology, manufacturing engineering technology, and culinary and general studies. With this array of programs, in industries with historically consistent demand for newly degreed and certified professionals, MCTC maintains a timely, relevant relationship to the employment markets across the U.S.

With the growing popularity of health sector careers, many students choose to enroll in Marshall's medical assistant program that requires significant studies in courses such as biology, and experience conducting biomedical tests. Other popular health-based degrees include health information technology, radiological technology, and respiratory therapy. These programs are designed to avoid unrelated coursework and prepare students for working in their chosen health occupation as soon as possible.

Occupational development is a strong part of any course of study at Marshall Technology College, including those that require automotive technology experience. Engineering courses included in the college's technical studies combine with hands-on experience to prepare students for real-world working environments.

Students at Marshall express a wide variety of interests, including banking, business, accounting, finance, child development, interior design, allied health, restaurant management, web development, and massage therapy. Marshall's wide variety of associate's degrees and certificate programs provide an essential base to any lifelong learning process, and many of them allow for continuing education and the pursuit of a more advanced degree.

Specialized Degree and Certificate Programs Allow Students to Transfer and Pursue Many Different Interests

Some students choose to pursue more specialized degrees that may include instruction from more than one program. Interdisciplinary studies at Marshall may present an opportunity to learn hotel management as well as business management skills, for example. Culinary arts may be combined with restaurant management, or computer engineering and science technology could serve a student's career goals more effectively than just one program offering.

The ability to create a specialized program at Marshall allows a student great flexibility when planning for the future, especially as regards transfer options and the completion of more advanced degree programs.

In addition, the college aims to make the learning process easier for working students with the availability of online e-courses.

Many students at MCTC eventually become transfer students and continue their studies at Marshall University. Students who may not be sure which career path is quite right for them can continue taking general studies classes that will eventually contribute toward their chosen degree.

Extensive Financial Aid Opportunities Make a Formal Education Possible for Everyone, Regardless of Wealth or Status

Marshall takes pride in the fact that 69 percent of its students receive aid to pursue their educational goals. Federal financial aid options include grants, work-study programs, and Stafford Loans, while West Virginia residents have the added advantage of state-specific grants and scholarships.

MCTC also takes pride in offering several types of scholarships and tuition waivers to make pursuing a higher education more affordable for many students. Members of the National Guard qualify for resident tuition rates, and employees and their immediate families have access to reduced tuition rates, as well. Families of law enforcement, firefighter, and National Guard personnel killed in the line of duty; West Virginia residents over the age of 65; and high school graduates in foster care are also eligible for tuition waivers.

Special metro tuition waivers exist for high school freshmen from Lawrence and Gallia Counties in Ohio. The Franklin and Redd Scholarships also provide added opportunity to find unconventional ways to pay for MCTC's degree-seeking programs.
