From sustainable engineering, architecture, and construction to chemistry and biology, students are combining theory and practice with "green" technology and are designing everything from earth-friendly transportation to energy-efficient homes.

Lawrence Technological University students have designed and built a solar-powered, energy-positive house that serves as an education center for the public and is part of a two-year-long research project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. Students are also frequent winners in the Michigan Zero Energy Home Competition, as well as the ASHRAE International Design Competition which encourages building design with environmental impact in mind. Student engineering teams design, build, and race Baja- and Formula-style vehicles, and have won the Tour de Sol with their 80 mpg hybrid-electric diesel sedan. As educational partners with Southfield's regional utility company, students study the operation of the first and largest hydrogen technology park of its type in the world.
