The core curricula taught at Muskingum for first-year undergraduates focuses both on free study and direct work in the field of each student's major. Virtually everyone on the faculty at Muskingum holds doctoral degrees or other terminal degree appropriate to their field. With over 100 full-time and part-time faculty members, the student-teacher ratio is a low 16:1, far superior to the national average. This intimate scenario promotes the rigorous and direct interaction with other students and teachers that embodies the school philosophy. All students take what are known as Liberal Arts Essentials, which serve to build strong communication skills and develop abilities in critical analysis and thought.

The science program at Muskingum, which includes environmental science, neuroscience, and more, is considered one of the best in the U.S. for undergraduate students. A fair number of housing opportunities exist for the vast majority of students who live on campus. Both traditional dormitory-style facilities and apartment-style living are available for those who attend Muskingum. For the few who reside in neighboring towns, such as Norwich or Cassell, or those that simply wish to travel around the state or take advantage big cities nearby, easy access to Interstate 70 or Rural Route 209 makes getting around a snap. Greyhound Bus Lines also have a station in town, and the Amtrak train station is close by in Zanesville. In the state that made commercial flight famous, there is no shortage of private and public air strips and airports.

There are many student organizations and groups to join for those enrolled at Muskingum. They range from the classic academic Greek life groups, such as Beta Beta Beta for those who focus in biology to Omicron Delta Epsilon for those who focus on economics studies. Social Greek organizations flourish also, as there are sororities and fraternities like Phi Kappa Tau, Psi Chi, and Chi Alpha Nu on campus. Those who enjoy the musical arts can become a part of the Chamber Singers, the Jazz Ensemble, or the Wind Ensemble. Many professional organizations, such as the Business Club, Model United Nations, and the Criminal Justice Association attract many participants, too. While Muskingum is Presbyterian, it offers a variety of other religious organizations to join as well.

The award-winning men and women's teams of the Muskingum athletic department include baseball, volleyball, soccer, and football. Recently, student Brock Whiteman was named the ESPN Academic All-American college baseball catcher. But students can play in a more casual atmosphere by playing on one of the several intramural teams that offer golf, racquetball, Wiffleball, or bowling.

Opportunities for financial aid abound at Muskingum, and almost a quarter of all students receive some level of help. Almost 500 work-study jobs are offered to support students. Most students only incur the debt value of one year of study and related expenses by the time they graduate.

Situated in the tiny rural town of New Concord in eastern Ohio, Muskingum University largely provides liberal arts degree programs to its nearly 1,700 undergraduate students and 1,300 graduate students. Muskingum University is a private, coeducational college that was founded over 170 ago as a Presbyterian school. Perched atop a hill on over 225 acres of prime land, the college is accredited by several official groups, including the American Chemical Society; The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools; the Ohio Confederation of Teacher Education Organization, and several others.

There are a number of things for students, staff, and visitors to do on campus throughout the school year. After undergraduate classes begin in late August, the Muskingum University Library holds "Communication in Visual Arts," an exhibition of southern-Ohio art. Other events, such as lectures from journalist Tom Hargrove, a variety of ongoing international cinematic screenings, and the multicultural student Christmas competition are just a few of the dozens of events ongoing at Muskingum. New Concord is situated almost equidistant from the capital of Columbus to the west, Cleveland to the north, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to the east.
