The University of North Carolina at Pembroke

Pembroke, North Carolina

Overview

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke Is Rich In Agriculture, Human Cultures, and Educational Opportunities

Pembroke, North Carolina, is a unique place that does not fit easily into any stereotypes or popular notions. It is a distinctly Southern community, and proudly progressive. Pembroke, a "college town" with a student population that ebbs and flows with the seasons and semesters, is rich in Native American heritage. With one foot in the storied past, and the other headed toward the future and its many promises, Pembroke draws strength from its multiple cultures and its own, local version of the All-American melting pot.

Pembroke is hometown not only to its residents and the Native American Lumbee tribe, the ninth-largest in America, but also to the 6,000 students of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNC Pembroke, UNCP). The quality of life in Pembroke and its neighboring towns has a distinct, Southern flavor, and the people are friendly, hardworking, and honest. There are many farmers in the area, so some events tend to revolve around agriculture, while others involve the Lumbee. These events, just like the Flora MacDonald Highland Games, which feature three days of authentic Scottish arts and crafts, athletic games, food, and a Highland dance competition, cannot be ignored by UNC Pembroke's students regardless of how seriously they want to take their studies.

University of North Carolina at Pembroke is just off Interstate 95 and is convenient to all of North Carolina and South Carolina's metropolitan areas, as well as the states' world-famous beaches and resorts. UNCP students can always find things to do in the area. Of course, hanging around the campus is always an option, and partly because of its rural, small-community setting, the UNC Pembroke campus is one of the safest in the nation.

Each of UNC Pembroke's Undergraduate Programs Provides a Solid Liberal Arts Education

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke has a mission, which is providing motivated students with the strongest possible foundation for a vast range of careers. So UNC Pembroke provides a strong and challenging liberal arts education, whereby its students encounter the great ideas and creations of literature, science, and art across time and across cultures. At its core, that liberal arts education imparts particular "habits of mind" critical thinking, clear writing, disciplined reasoning, that UNC Pembroke's students will use throughout their personal and professional lives.

The university offers more than forty different undergraduate programs. In addition to the "scholarly aspects" of a student's chosen discipline, they also learn how to balance the emotional, mental, and physical aspects of life, an important but often neglected part of a complete liberal arts education. Some of UNC Pembroke¿s undergraduate programs require internships and/or senior theses, which are just two of the many hands-on experiences offered by the university that students can highlight as they introduce themselves and their particular talents to prospective employers or graduate school admissions representatives.

UNC Pembroke's faculty members, an elite group of exceptional teacher-scholars, are dedicated not only to expanding the frontiers of knowledge, but also to guiding the university's students along those frontiers as they push forward with their liberal arts educations. A student-faculty ratio of 14:1 and an average class size of some 30 students allows for maximum interaction and ongoing mentoring opportunities in most undergraduate programs. Both the rigorous curriculum and the one-on-one attention help graduates to create vibrant and fascinating lives and careers.

UNCP Offers First-Rate Student Services and Resources and Housing and Dining, and a Great Performing Arts Center Series

UNC Pembroke's full range of student services and resources helps students with both their lives and studies. Free e-mail accounts, computer labs, career planning, tutoring, and study-skills assistance can smooth out the bumps in the road. Students who need PC troubleshooting or lessons in resume writing get personal help at UNC Pembroke, where student services and resources offer them the opportunity to help others, too.

UNCP's Office of Housing and Residence Life is charged with providing a safe, well-maintained environment in support of the school¿s academic mission. The sort of "living and learning" that resident students undertake outside of the classroom helps them become engaged members of the community.

Located on UNC Pembroke's campus, the Givens Performing Arts Center is a 1,600-seat regional arts-and-entertainment venue that hosts Broadway road shows and other touring performers. The Givens presents three major series annually, including the Distinguished Speaker Series, the Nostalgia Concert Series, and Broadway and More. The center's offerings have brought such authors, artists, and performers as Spike Lee, humorist Dave Barry, and singer Dionne Warwick, in addition to productions of "Cats" and "Seussical the Musical" to campus.
