At the core of the Pitzer College mission is a dedication to a liberal arts education and the rigorous pursuit of knowledge. Combined majors, for instance, allow a student to combine study in two or more fields, with modifications of the standard requirements of each major allowed with the approval of a faculty adviser. Special majors are also popular at Pitzer College, and permit students to create their own area of study in concert with their academic adviser and with approval by the Pitzer Curriculum Committee. Those students with a penchant for academic pursuits, and who meet the rigorous standards set forth by Pitzer, will be awarded Honors in their field of study upon graduation.
While the classroom is the standard setting for the educational experience at Pitzer, there is also a strong emphasis on experiential learning, especially by means of the college's study abroad program. While many universities and colleges tout such programs, well over half of the students at Pitzer engage in the study abroad program, an indication of the truly global nature of the California school's education.
