From the College
The University
The University of New Haven’s (UNH) mission is to prepare career-ready graduates for meaningful roles in today’s global economy and to nurture pursuit of lifelong learning. Founded in 1920, the University of New Haven is a private, independent institution focused on combining professional education with liberal arts and sciences. UNH is committed to educational innovation, to continuous improvement in career and professional education, and to support of scholarship and professional development. UNH became a four-year college in 1958. Moving to its present location in West Haven in 1960, UNH rapidly expanded its programs, facilities, and faculty, attracting a student body that now stands at more than 4,700–including the current enrollment of 2,585 full-time day students among its undergraduates.
The University is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Individual programs, departments, and schools hold various forms of national professional accreditation. Four of the University of New Haven’s bachelor’s degree programs–chemical, civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering–are fully accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (EAC/ABET). The computer science program is fully accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (CAC/ABET).
Despite a broad academic program, UNH is small enough to accommodate individualized educational needs. Programs evolve and adapt to meet changing career interests as well as the requirements of business, industry, and professional fields. Small classes foster close student-faculty relationships. Accelerated weekend and evening programs in business and convenient evening hours provide access for part-time students in engineering, computers, public safety, and the arts and sciences.
The main campus is in West Haven, Connecticut, on a hillside close to Long Island Sound. UNH also operates a satellite branch, the Southeastern Center in New London, Connecticut. Main campus administrative and classroom buildings support the University’s four academic colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the Tagliatela College of Engineering, and the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences. Following the addition of the Graduate School in 1969, New Haven College was designated a university. Twenty-seven master’s degree programs attract full- and part-time graduate students, while more than eighty associate and bachelor’s degree programs are available to entering freshmen and transfer students in a great variety of academic disciplines. In 2007, UNH established University College to oversee the graduate school admissions process as well as its evening, accelerated, cohort, and executive degree programs.
Other main campus buildings include the Marvin K. Peterson Library, Echlin Hall, the Bayer Hall admissions building, the Campus Bookstore, new residence halls and apartments, and Bartels Hall, the campus center, which houses dining facilities and student activities. The Charger Gymnasium and athletic fields are located on the North Campus, just two short blocks from Maxcy Hall, the main administration building. The David A. Beckerman Recreational Center, a new state-of-the-art athletic facility for the benefit of all students, opened in fall 2007.
UNH is currently an NCAA Division II school and offers seventeen intercollegiate varsity athletic programs as well as an extensive intramural program for both men and women. Varsity teams for men include baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, indoor track, outdoor track and field, soccer, and volleyball. Women’s varsity sports are basketball, cross-country, indoor and outdoor track, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. UNH Charger teams have earned national top-twenty rankings in a variety of sports. The University currently competes in the East Coast Conference (ECC); however, in fall 2009, UNH will move from the ECC to the Northeast 10 Conference. Considering a move to NCAA Division I, the University officially entered an exploratory year in June 2007. During this year, UNH continues to compete as a Division II school.
Approximately two thirds of the full-time undergraduate day students live on campus in the eight residence halls. Approximately fifty clubs and organizations are open to students. Included are student chapters of professional societies, religious organizations, social groups, special-interest clubs, student councils, cultural groups, and fraternities and sororities.
Location
West Haven is contiguous to New Haven. There are theaters that attract star performers from the entertainment world, a deepwater harbor and beaches, fine restaurants, museums, and galleries in the area. Numerous social and cultural programs are presented by the many colleges and universities in the area. New Haven is served by a local airport and major railroads, and its location at the junction of two interstate highways places the University of New Haven within easy driving distance of New York, Boston, Cape Cod, and the ski areas of New England.

Academic Programs
The University of New Haven offers a broad range of programs in both liberal arts and professional areas. Experiential learning is emphasized, and there are diverse and numerous opportunities for career-oriented internships, cooperative education, independent study, and industrial projects. Certain types of professional experience are required in a number of degree programs. The Center for Learning Resources offers a tutoring service that is open to all students.
The undergraduate division operates on a 4-1-4 calendar. Credit is given for successful scores on the CLEP and Advanced Placement examinations. A University honors program provides outstanding study opportunities in most undergraduate disciplines. The residence requirement for all degrees is 30 credit hours.
UNH believes that all students pursuing a bachelor’s degree should develop a common set of skills; the University’s goal is to prepare all graduates for the complex lives they will lead in a changing world. This can best be done through the University Core Curriculum, which consists of a minimum of 40 credit hours in six basic competencies.
An available option at the University is cooperative education, an academic program that offers students the opportunity to combine career-oriented, compensated, full-time work with their education.
Academic Facilities
The Marvin K. Peterson Library contains more than 400,000 volumes and is a U.S. government documents depository library. Information is accessible through manual as well as electronic retrieval methods. Internet access, online databases, and an online catalog are available. The library subscribes to hundreds of journals and has a CD-ROM collection for accessing materials published in a wide variety of subjects. Through interlibrary loan services, UNH has access to the holdings of more than 8,650 libraries.
Communication majors participate in workshops along with studying sound, film, and television production and radio broadcasting techniques in well-equipped radio/television studios and laboratories. The Tagliatela College of Engineering has modern laboratories and equipment to support its programs. The College of Arts and Sciences maintains art studios, state-of-the-art recording studios, music practice rooms, and science, psychology, and language labs. Hands-on instruction and demonstrations are available in kitchen facilities for students in the hospitality and tourism and nutrition and dietetics programs. Dental hygiene students gain experience in the Dental Hygiene Clinic.
There are more than a dozen computer labs for student use and teaching on campus. One of these is devoted to forensic computing instruction for the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences.

Costs
Full-time undergraduate tuition for the 2008–09 academic year, including the activity and health fees, was $27,950; room and board cost $11,506.
Financial Aid
UNH offers a comprehensive financial aid program that includes University resources as well as state, federal, and private aid programs. Approximately 85 percent of full-time undergraduate students receive some form of assistance. Students receive federal aid through the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Work-Study, Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Stafford Student Loan, and Federal PLUS loan programs. The University also administers programs sponsored by the state of Connecticut for Connecticut residents attending the University. Some students also qualify for financial aid from other states and from private companies, organizations, and foundations.
Faculty
It is a long-standing University policy that the faculty members teach a mix of undergraduate and graduate courses in order to preserve academic quality at all levels. Faculty members are selected and promoted primarily on the basis of teaching effectiveness, professional qualifications and performance, and contributions to the academic community. No classes are taught by teaching assistants. Some faculty members hold administrative positions and continue to teach. There are approximately 180 full-time and 315 part-time faculty members, making the student-faculty ratio 14:1. The majority of full-time faculty members (82 percent) hold terminal degrees in their disciplines.
Student Government
The Undergraduate Student Government Association supervises annual expenditures by undergraduate clubs and organizations, directs liaison committees, supports student publications and the student-operated FM radio station, and schedules cultural and social events. Student representatives are elected annually to the University’s Board of Governors.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for admission, one must be a high school graduate or present evidence of equivalent preparation. Scores from the SAT or the ACT are required. The admission decision is based on the student’s overall high school record, SAT or ACT results, letters of recommendation, and personal essay.
Prospective students are encouraged to visit the campus for an information session and tour. Out-of-state residents are considered for admission on the same basis as state residents.
