As a "small college town," Chapel Hill offers a buzzing music scene, with various clubs in the region featuring live music on a regular basis. A wide variety of well-known artists claim the town as an integral part of their musical "roots." Chapel Hill has also developed a reputation for excellent American cuisine that has spawned national media attention and offers UNC students the opportunity to experience a more cosmopolitan setting than is often associated with college towns. The small, urban-style "villages"--featuring green space, community pools, and unique retail experiences--that have started to spring up around Chapel Hill area are another attractive feature of the area.

A State College Offering a Public Ivy Liberal Arts Education Along with Undergraduate Research Opportunities
Sometimes known as a "public ivy," the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) is the oldest public university in the United States. All undergraduates at UNC begin laying the foundation of a liberal arts education as freshmen. As sophomores, and depending on their choice from among more than seventy programs of study, they declare a major in the College of Arts and Sciences or apply to one of the university's nine professional schools. Hundreds of courses support the programs that are offered by UNC, a community that is known for its friendliness and its commitment to the public good.
UNC offers more than the foundation of a strong liberal arts education; it is also one of the leading research universities in the world. Research at UNC, however, is not limited to the sciences or to graduate students. Individual students or small groups of students in every major and in every year have the opportunity to do mentored, self-directed work that explores an issue of interest to them and then communicate the results to others. To a greater to lesser degree, depending on the topic, undergraduate research projects involve inquiry, design, investigation, research, scholarship, discovery, application, writing, and/or performance.
In addition to the school's noted excellence in academics and opportunity for undergraduate research, UNC is also well-known for the great performance of its athletic teams. The success of its athletic programs is underscored by the numerous Olympians and professional athletes that have come from the school.
The rich tradition of both athletic and academic excellence at UNC make it a fine choice for students who wish to rigorously pursue their academic and social development within the context of a university with a rich history and a solid record of preparing its graduates for lifelong achievement and success.
