Students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) enjoy a beautiful 729-acre suburban campus and a wide variety of activities, events, restaurants, and attractions. Sometimes known as a "public ivy," the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) is the oldest public university in the United States. All undergraduates at UNC begin laying the foundation of a liberal arts education as freshmen. As sophomores, and depending on their choice from among more than seventy programs of study, they declare a major in the College of Arts and Sciences or apply to one of the university's nine professional schools. Hundreds of courses support the programs that are offered by UNC, a community that is known for its friendliness and its commitment to the public good.
UNC offers more than the foundation of a strong liberal arts education; it is also one of the leading research universities in the world. Research at UNC, however, is not limited to the sciences or to graduate students.
