In addition, one of the favorite hangouts in the city is the Downtown Mall, a pedestrian mall featuring about 120 boutiques and specialty stores, some thirty restaurants, a movie theater, and an ice skating rink. There are four cutting-edge indoor fitness facilities, including a popular aquatics and fitness center, on the campus. The university's athletic teams are highly competitive in the Atlantic Coast Conference, competing as a Division I school. The university has sent a notable number of student workers to the Peace Corps and its many programs offer students a myriad of opportunities to volunteer in areas such as housing improvement, tutoring, and fighting against hunger.
