The College and Its Mission

Brown Mackie College–North Canton is one of over twenty locations in the Brown Mackie College family of schools (http://www.brownmackie.edu), which is dedicated to providing educational programs that prepare students to pursue entry-level positions in a competitive, rapidly-changing workplace. Brown Mackie College schools offer bachelor's degree, associate degree, certificate, and diploma programs in health sciences, business, information technology, legal studies, and design to over 14,000 students in the Midwest, Southeastern, and Southwestern United States.

Brown Mackie College–North Canton opened its classroom doors in January 1984 as National Electronics Institute (NEI). In July 1985, the school was purchased by Electronics Technology Institute of Cleveland and became a branch facility. The name was changed to Electronic Technology Institute. When Electronic Technical Institute of Cleveland was granted the right to confer the bachelor’s degree, it changed its name to ETI Technical College. In May 1995, the assets of ETI Technical College of Canton were purchased by Career Options Inc., an Ohio corporation. In June 2002, the College came under the ownership of Southern Ohio College LLC, and the College’s name then changed to AEC Southern Ohio College. The name of the College was changed to Brown Mackie College in November 2004. In June 2007, Brown Mackie College of North Canton moved into its new facility at 4300 Munson Street in Canton.

Brown Mackie College–North Canton is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) to award associate degrees and diplomas. The Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools is listed as a nationally recognized accrediting agency by the United States Department of Education and is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Academic Programs

Brown Mackie College–North Canton provides higher education to traditional and nontraditional students through associate degree and diploma programs that can assist them in enhancing their career opportunities, broadening their perspectives through appropriate general education courses, thinking independently and critically, and improving problem-solving abilities. The College strives to develop within its students the desire for lifelong and continued education.

Each College quarter comprises twelve weeks. Programs are offered on a year-round basis, providing students with the ability to work uninterrupted toward the completion of their programs. The College offers all programs in a unique One Course a Month schedule. This schedule allows students to focus studies on only one course for four weeks. This schedule has proven convenient for students with multiple obligations such as jobs and family.

Associate Degree Programs: Associate degree programs require a minimum of eight quarters to complete. The Associate of Applied Business degree (96 credits) is awarded in accounting technology, business management, computer networking and applications, criminal justice, and paralegal. The Associate of Applied Science degree is awarded in computer-aided design and drafting technology, health-care administration, medical assisting, pharmacy technology, and surgical technology.

Diploma Programs: The College offers diploma programs (48 credits) in accounting, business, computer-aided design and drafting technician, criminal justice, medical assistant, paralegal assistant, and practical nursing (76 credit hours for nursing).

Costs

Tuition for programs in the 2009–10 academic year is $235 per credit hour, with some exceptions. Tuition for practical nursing is $295 per credit hour, surgical technology is $275 per credit hour, and the six core classes for computer networking and applications are $300 per credit hour. General fees are $15 per credit hour with some exceptions. General fees for practical nursing and surgical technology are $20 per credit hour, and $25 per credit hour for the six core classes in computer networking and applications. Textbooks and other instructional materials vary by program.

Financial Aid

Financial aid is available to those who qualify. The College maintains a full-time staff of financial aid professionals to assist qualified students in obtaining financial assistance. The College participates in several student aid programs. Forms of financial aid available through federal resources include Federal Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG), the Federal Work-Study Program, Federal Perkins Loans, Federal Stafford Student Loans (subsidized and unsubsidized), the Federal PLUS Program, and veterans’ educational benefits. Eligible students may apply for state awards such as the Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG). Students with physical or mental disabilities that are a handicap may be eligible for training services through the state Vocational Rehabilitation Agency. For further information, students should contact the College Student Financial Services Office.

Each year, the College makes available President’s Scholarships of $1000 each to qualifying seniors from area high schools. No more than one scholarship is awarded per high school. In order to qualify, a senior must be graduating from a participating high school, maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0, and submit a brief essay. The student’s extracurricular activities and community service are also considered. The President’s Scholarship is available only to students enrolling in one of the College’s degree programs. Students who receive the scholarship must enroll at Brown Mackie College–North Canton between June and September immediately following their high school graduation. Applications for these scholarships can be obtained from the guidance departments of participating high schools. These applications must be completed and returned to the College by March 31.

Faculty

Currently, there are 22 full-time and 68 part-time faculty members. The average student-faculty ratio is 20:1. The College has seven program chairs who have advanced degrees and real-world experience in each of the fields of study offered by the college. In addition to program chairs, the academic affairs department of the College has two librarians and two academic advisors who are available to the students during school hours.

Facilities and Resources

In addition to classrooms and computer labs, the College maintains a library of curriculum-related resources, technical and general education materials, academic and professional periodicals, and audiovisual resources. Internet access also is available for research.

Admission Requirements

Each applicant for admission is assigned an Assistant Director of Admissions, who directs the applicant through the steps of the admissions process, providing information on curriculum, policies, procedures, and services and assisting the applicant in setting necessary appointments and interviews. To qualify for admission, each applicant must provide documentation of graduation from an accredited high school or from a state-approved secondary education curriculum or provide official documentation of high school graduation equivalency. All transcripts become the property of the College. Admission to the College is based upon the applicant’s meeting the above requirements, a review of the applicant’s previous educational records, and a review of the applicant’s career interests. If previous academic records indicate that the College’s education and training would not benefit the applicant, the College reserves the right to advise the applicant not to enroll. Special requirements for enrollment into certain programs are discussed in the descriptions of those programs.
