Mountain State University (MSU) is a private, not-for-profit university whose main campus is located in the scenic highlands of Beckley, West Virginia. The university is dedicated to providing students with an outstanding professionally-oriented education in a relaxed environment that promotes academic excellence.
With six campuses, dozens of educational sites, and distance learning options, MSU serves more than 8,000 students a year from across the United States and around the world with degree programs offered at the associates, bachelors, and graduate levels. Mountain State is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
Selected degree programs and courses are available through Mountain State University's branch campuses, which are located in Center Township, Pennsylvania; Martinsburg, West Virginia; Mooresville, North Carolina; Orlando, Florida; and Washington, D.C. Selected programs and courses are also available in Hickory, North Carolina; at educational sites throughout West Virginia; and through online study and other distance learning options.
Mountain State University Offers a Variety of Degrees to Help Prepare Students for Careers
The MSU School of Arts and Sciences in Beckley, West Virginia, offers degrees in a wide range of professional fields, including criminal justice, forensic investigation, and psychology. It also offers degrees in general studies and liberal studies.
Mountain State University's School of Business and Technology prepares students for careers in traditional areas of business administration and accounting and in specialized fields, including computer science and information technology, culinary arts, legal studies, office administration, and paralegal studies. These programs help students develop the managerial and technical skills they need to identify and respond to complex challenges in business.
The Patsy H. Haslam School of Health Sciences on the Beckley campus prepares students for a wide range of health care professions, including nursing, occupational therapy assistant studies, physical therapist assistant studies, and health studies. A prerequisite physician assistant studies curriculum prepares undergraduate students for Mountain State University's entry-level master's program.
These health sciences programs prepare students to apply for certifications and licensures required for clinical practice and qualify them to pursue more advanced degrees in their specific field or a related discipline. The social work program is also housed within this school.
Mountain State's School of Leadership and Professional Development offers a bachelor's degree completion program in organizational leadership, a master's degree program in strategic leadership, and a doctoral program in executive leadership. All three are available in a format that requires one evening a week in a classroom or online meeting, with individual assignments and group projects between meetings. Optional undergraduate concentrations in criminal justice leadership and hospitality leadership are available.
At the graduate level, Mountain State University offers degree programs in criminal justice administration, health science, interdisciplinary studies, nursing, physician assistant studies, and psychology in addition to the previously mentioned leadership programs. Some graduate programs provide for flexible study and distance learning with no residency requirement.
Student services in Beckley, West Virginia, and Mountain State University's branch campuses include orientation, academic advising, tutoring, and a testing center. A variety of student organizations and activities are based on campus, and a student union is centrally located on the Beckley campus.
Mountain State University Admission Requirements
Mountain State University's overall admissions policy is open, although some programs have more competitive requirements. Prospective students who have graduated from an accredited high school or received a General Educational Development (GED) certificate are eligible to apply.
Students apply for undergraduate admission by submitting an application; an official high school transcript, home schooling document, or GED certificate; and a housing application or exemption form with the $25 application fee. Transfer applicants must also submit official transcripts for previous college-level course work. Additional processes and an application fee of $50 are required for international applicants.
MSU applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and applicants are notified of their acceptance status as soon as the application process is completed. ACT or SAT scores are not required for admission to Mountain State University, but are recommended for placement purposes. Competitive programs or courses may have minimum ACT or SAT scores, placement tests, recommended application dates, or other requirements.
