The College and Its Mission

Brown Mackie College–Louisville is one of over twenty locations in the Brown Mackie College family of schools (http://www.brownmackie.edu), which is dedicated to providing educational programs that prepare students to pursue entry-level positions in a competitive, rapidly-changing workplace. Brown Mackie College schools offer bachelor's degree, associate degree, certificate, and diploma programs in health sciences, business, information technology, legal studies, and design to over 14,000 students in the Midwest, Southeastern, and Southwestern United States.

Brown Mackie College–Louisville opened in 1972 as RETS Institute of Technology. The first RETS school was founded in 1935 in Detroit in response to the rapid growth of radio broadcasting and the need for qualified radio technicians. The RETS Institute changed its name to Brown Mackie College–Louisville in 2004.

Brown Mackie College–Louisville is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) to award associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates. The Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools is listed as a nationally recognized accrediting agency by the United States Department of Education and is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. The Brown Mackie College–Louisville’s Associate of Applied Science degree in surgical technology is accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools, 7777 Leesburg Pike, Suite 314N, Falls Church, Virginia 22043; 703-917-9503.

The occupational therapy assistant program has applied for accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 4720 Montgomery Lane, P.O. Box 31220, Bethesda, Maryland 20824; 301-652-AOTA.

The College is a nonresidential, smoke-free institution and provides ample parking at no additional cost.

Academic Programs

Brown Mackie College–Louisville provides higher education to traditional and nontraditional students through associate degree, diploma, and certificate programs that can assist them in enhancing their career opportunities, broadening their perspectives through appropriate general education courses, thinking independently and critically, and improving problem-solving abilities.

Each College quarter comprises twelve weeks. Bachelor’s degree programs require a minimum of 16 quarters to complete and associate degree programs require a minimum of eight quarters to complete. Programs are offered on a year-round basis, providing students with the ability to work uninterrupted toward their degrees. The College offers all programs in a unique One Course a Month schedule. This schedule allows students to focus studies on only one course for four weeks. This schedule has proven convenient for students with multiple obligations such as jobs and family.

Bachelor’s Degree Programs: The Bachelor of Science degree (180 credits) is awarded in business management, criminal justice, health care administration, and legal studies.

Associate Degree Programs: The Associate of Applied Business degree (96 credits) is awarded in accounting technology, business management, computer networking and applications, criminal justice, and paralegal. The Associate of Applied Science degree (96 credits) is awarded in biomedical equipment technology, early childhood education, electronics, graphic design, health-care administration, medical assisting, occupational therapy assistant (100 credits), pharmacy technology, surgical technology, and veterinary technician.

Diploma Programs: The College offers diploma programs (48 credits) in medical assistant, paralegal assistant, and practical nursing.

Certificate Program: The College offers a certificate program (24 credits) in computer networking and applications.

Costs

Tuition for programs in the 2009–10 academic year is $235 per credit hour, with the exception of the practical nursing diploma program which is $295 per credit hour, the surgical technology program which is $275 per credit hour, and computer networking courses which are $300 per credit hour. The length of the program determines total cost. The cost of textbooks and other instructional materials varies by program.

Financial Aid

Financial aid is available to those who qualify. The College maintains a full-time staff of financial aid professionals to assist qualified students in obtaining financial assistance. The College participates in several student aid programs. Forms of financial aid available to qualified students through federal resources include the Federal Pell Grant Program, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) Program, Federal Work-Study Program, Federal Perkins Loan Program, Federal Stafford Student Loan Program (subsidized and unsubsidized), and the Federal PLUS Loan Program. Students may apply for state-based award programs, such as the College Access Program (CAP) Grant Program and the Kentucky Educational Excellence Award (KEES). Eligible students may also apply for veterans’ benefits. Students with physical or mental disabilities that are a handicap to employment may be eligible for training services through the state Agency for Vocational Rehabilitation. For further information, students should contact the College Student Financial Services Office.

Each year, the College makes available President’s Scholarships of $1000 each to qualifying seniors from area high schools. No more than one scholarship is awarded per high school. In order to qualify, a senior must be graduating from a participating high school, must be maintaining a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0, and must submit a brief essay. The student’s extracurricular activities and community service are also considered. The President’s Scholarship is available only to students enrolling in one of the College’s degree programs. Students awarded the scholarship must enroll at Brown Mackie College–Louisville between June and September immediately following their high school graduation. Applications for these scholarships can be obtained from the guidance departments of participating high schools. These applications must be completed and returned to the College by March 31.

Faculty

There are 20 full-time and over 40 part-time faculty members at the College. The average student-faculty ratio is 20:1.

Facilities and Resources

Brown Mackie College–Louisville has more than 42,000 square feet of multipurpose classrooms, including networked computer laboratories, electronics laboratories, veterinary technology labs, a resource center, and offices for administrative personnel as well as for student services such as admissions, student financial services, and career-services assistance. In May 2009, an additional 6,000 square feet was opened at the Louisville location. Included in this build-out is an occupational therapy lab, a criminal justice lab, additional classrooms, and faculty space.

The College is at 3605 Fern Valley Road, Louisville, Kentucky, conveniently located at the intersection of Fern Valley and Preston Highway.

Admission Requirements

Each applicant for admission is assigned an Assistant Director of Admissions who directs the applicant through the steps of the admissions process, providing information on curriculum, policies, procedures, and services and assisting the applicant in setting necessary appointments and interviews.

To qualify for admission, each applicant must provide documentation of graduation from an accredited high school or completion of a state-approved secondary education curriculum or provide official documentation of high school graduation equivalency. All transcripts become the property of the College. Admission to the College is based on the applicant’s meeting the above requirements, a review of the applicant’s previous educational records, and a review of the applicant’s career interests. If previous academic records indicate that the College’s education and training would not benefit the applicant, the College reserves the right to advise the applicant not to enroll. Special requirements for enrollment into certain programs are discussed in the descriptions of those programs.
