The College and Its Mission

Brown Mackie College–Fort Wayne is one of over twenty locations in the Brown Mackie College family of schools (http://www.brownmackie.edu), which is dedicated to providing educational programs that prepare students to pursue entry-level positions in a competitive, rapidly-changing workplace. Brown Mackie College schools offer bachelor's degree, associate degree, certificate, and diploma programs in health sciences, business, information technology, legal studies, and design to over 14,000 students in the Midwest, Southeastern, and Southwestern United States.

In 1992, the school, currently known as Brown Mackie College–South Bend, added a branch campus in Fort Wayne, Indiana. In 2004, Michiana College’s Fort Wayne location changed its name to Brown Mackie College–Fort Wayne.

Brown Mackie College–Fort Wayne is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) to award bachelor’s degrees, associate degrees, and certificates. The Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools is listed as a nationally recognized accrediting agency by the United States Department of Education and is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. The physical therapy assistant program is pending accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).

Academic Programs

Brown Mackie College–Fort Wayne provides higher education to traditional and nontraditional students through bachelor’s degree, associate degree, diploma, and certificate programs that can assist them in enhancing their career opportunities, broadening their perspectives through appropriate general education courses, thinking independently and critically, and improving problem-solving abilities. The College strives to develop within its students the desire for lifelong and continued education.

Each College quarter comprises twelve weeks. Bachelor’s degree programs require a minimum of sixteen quarters to complete. Associate degree programs require a minimum of eight quarters to complete. Programs are offered on a year-round basis, providing students with the ability to work uninterrupted toward their degrees. The College offers all programs in a unique One Course a Month schedule. This schedule allows students to focus studies on only one course for four weeks. This schedule has proven convenient for students with multiple obligations such as jobs and family.

Bachelor’s Degree Programs: The Bachelor of Science degree (184 credits) is awarded in business administration, criminal justice, health-care management, and legal studies.

Associate Degree Programs: The Associate of Science degree (96 credits) is awarded in accounting technology, business management, computer software technology, criminal justice, health-care administration, medical assisting, paralegal, and surgical technology. The Associate of Applied Science degree (96 credits) is awarded in occupational therapy assistant (100 credits) and physical therapist assistant studies.

Diploma Program: The College offers a diploma program (76 credits) in practical nursing.

Certificate Programs: The College offers certificate programs (48 credits) in accounting, business, computer software applications, criminal justice, medical assistant, and paralegal assistant.

Costs

Tuition in the 2009–10 academic year for all programs except practical nursing and occupational therapy assistant studies is $235 per credit hour; fees are $15 per credit hour. For the practical nursing program, tuition is $295 per credit hour; fees are $20 per credit hour. For certain courses in the occupational therapy assistant and the physical therapist assistant studies program, tuition is $350 per credit hour; fees are $15 per credit hour. For certain courses in the surgical technology program, tuition is $275 per credit hour; fees are $15 per credit hour. The cost of textbooks and other instructional materials varies by program.

Financial Aid

Financial aid is available to those who qualify. The College maintains a full-time staff of financial aid professionals to assist qualified students in obtaining the financial assistance they require to meet their educational expenses. Available resources include federal and state aid, student loans from private lenders, and federal work-study opportunities, both on and off college premises. Federal assistance programs are administered through the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Student Financial Assistance. Any U.S. citizen, national, or person in the United States, other than temporary residents, who is enrolled or accepted for enrollment may apply for these programs.

Each year, the College makes available scholarships of $1000 each to qualifying seniors from area high schools. No more than one scholarship is awarded per high school. In order to qualify, a senior must have graduated from a participating high school, maintained a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0, and submitted a brief essay. The student’s extracurricular activities and community service are also considered. The scholarship is available only to students enrolling in one of the College’s degree programs. Students awarded the scholarship must enroll at Brown Mackie College–Fort Wayne between June and September immediately following their high school graduation. Applications for these scholarships can be obtained from the guidance departments of participating high schools. These applications must be completed and returned to the College by March 31.

Faculty

The College has 27 full-time and 65 part-time instructors, with a student-faculty ratio of 15:1. Each student is assigned a faculty adviser.

Facilities and Resources

In 2005, the campus relocated to a 50,000 square foot facility at 3000 East Coliseum Boulevard. Record enrollment allowed the institution to triple in size in less than a year. The three-story building offers a modern, professional environment for study. Five classrooms are outfitted as “classrooms of the future,” with an instructor workstation, full multimedia capabilities, a surround sound system, and projection screen that can be accessed by computer, DVD, or VHS equipment. The Brown Mackie College–Fort Wayne facility includes medical labs, computer labs, and occupational and physical therapy labs, as well as a library and bookstore. The labs provide students with hands-on opportunities to apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom. Students are welcome to use the labs when those facilities are not in use for scheduled classes.

The College is nonresidential and smoke free.

Location

Brown Mackie College–Fort Wayne is located at 3000 East Coliseum Boulevard in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The College is accessible by public transportation and provides ample parking at no cost. For added convenience, the College also operates a learning site at 2135 South Hannah Drive in Fort Wayne.

Admission Requirements

Each applicant for admission is assigned an Assistant Director of Admissions, who directs the applicant through the steps of the admissions process, providing information on curriculum, policies, procedures, and services and assisting the applicant in setting necessary appointments and interviews.

To qualify for admission, each applicant must provide documentation of graduation from an accredited high school or from a state-approved secondary education curriculum or provide official documentation of high school graduation equivalency. All transcripts become the property of the College. Admission to the College is based on the applicant’s meeting the stated requirements, a review of the applicant’s previous educational records, and a review of the applicant’s career interests. If previous academic records indicate the College’s education and training programs would not benefit the applicant, the College reserves the right to advise the applicant not to enroll. Special requirements for enrollment into certain programs are discussed in the descriptions of those programs.

In addition to the College’s general admission requirements, applicants enrolling in the practical nursing program must document the following, which must be completed and a record of proof must appear in the student’s file prior to the start of the Nursing Fundamentals course. No student will be admitted to a clinical agency unless all paperwork is completed. The paperwork is a requirement of all contracted agencies. This paperwork includes records of (1) a complete physical, current to within six months of admission; (2) a two-step Mantoux test that is kept current throughout schooling; (3) a hepatitis B vaccination or signed refusal; (4) up-to-date immunizations, including tetanus and rubella; (5) a record of current CPR certification that is maintained throughout the student’s clinical experience; and (6) hospitalization insurance or a signed waiver.
