With a population of close to 140,000 and growing, Fort Collins, Colorado is a burgeoning city with ample opportunities to work, go to school, or appreciate the outdoors. Located 60 miles from Denver and 46 miles from Cheyenne, the city is host to Colorado State University and a myriad of outdoor recreational opportunities right within city limits.
Fort Collins, Colorado, boasts three golf courses, forty parks, twenty-five miles of hiking trails, paved biking trails, and is home to two annual marathons. Colorado State University is situated against majestic Rocky Mountain foothills and is renowned for providing its students with challenging, complex, and yet useful real-world problems. There are a number of distinguished agencies and businesses in the area including the National Center for Atmospheric Research, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the US Forest Service, and the National Institute for Standards and Technology.
When it first opened in 1879, Colorado State University was originally named the Agriculture College of Colorado. Currently the institution has close to 1,500 full-time faculty in over 50 departments and more than 60 areas of study. It also boasts a rich listing of alumni including teachers, researchers, artists, Olympic gold medalists, and state governors.
Colorado State University's history is closely tied to local agriculture and the institution makes it a priority to be connected to its community. Students can be found relaxing on a beautiful expanse of green in the center of campus, called the Oval--an important university landmark. The epicenter of Colorado State University's activities, the Oval is known for its music building, which was once the university library, and Ammons Hall, which used to be the university's recreational center for women. Another campus cornerstone is the main plaza, which has a number of academic buildings surrounding it, including Morgan Library and the Lory Student Center.
Colorado State University offers quite a few unique academic programs, including several in design and creative arts and a certificate in Ethnic Studies. In addition, the university is host to a variety of learning communities-- residential communities for students of like-interests.
