Saint Louis University–Madrid Campus

Madrid, Spain

Overview

At Saint Louis University's Madrid Campus, Students Are Able to Choose from a Broad Variety of Course Options

Each term, students choose from more than 200 courses (45 during each summer session), taught in English and Spanish, that fulfill degree requirements for the 85 undergraduate majors offered by Saint Louis University-Madrid. This variety permits study abroad students to design their own programs. It also makes the study abroad experience available to students pursuing degrees for which it is not always an option--engineering and nursing, for example.

Students majoring in Spanish, communications, political science/international relations, economics, and business administration/international business can complete their undergraduate degrees in Madrid. English majors spend one term in St. Louis. Other majors transfer after two or three years to either the university's St. Louis campus or elsewhere to finish their degrees. All courses and programs offered are fully accredited in both the U.S. and Spain.

Extracurricular Activities Abound for Students, including Travel and On-Campus Activities

The SLU Madrid campus sponsors a wide range of extracurricular activities, both on and off campus, including student government, dance, theatre, and sports, as well as academic trips that deepen students' cultural understanding of Spain or that complement their studies by bringing them to other destinations, including major European cities, Africa, and South America.

The Campus is Located in Madrid, One of the Most Vibrant Cities in the World

Saint Louis University's Madrid campus is located in the university area of Madrid, on the northwest side of the city, with superb metro and bus access, and within walking distance of the city center.

Four buildings house classrooms, a library, science and computer labs, an art studio, music practice rooms, a cafeteria, a student center, and faculty and staff offices. Most visiting students choose to live with a Spanish host family, though housing in shared apartments or in nearby colegio mayores (Spanish university dormitories) is also available.

Various Scholarships, Work-Grants and Financial Aid Are Available to Students

First-year students who apply to the Madrid campus are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships ranging from 1,000-4,000 Euros per semester. These awards are based on a student's academic credentials as demonstrated by previous coursework, test scores, and the potential to enhance the academic and extracurricular environment of the university. In addition, SLU Madrid also makes available a limited number of work-grant opportunities each semester.

U.S. citizens and permanent residents are also eligible for Saint Louis University need-based financial aid (federal, state, and privately funded student aid programs) by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The Jesuit Heritage Is Ever-Present on the Madrid Campus, Emphasizing the Education of the Whole Person

As a Jesuit institution, Saint Louis University aims to educate the whole person, encouraging students to challenge ideas, contribute their time and talent to the community, and develop ethical and moral leadership abilities. In accordance with the ideals and principles set out by the founder of the Society of Jesus--St. Ignatius of Loyola--strong emphasis is placed on educating the mind, body, and spirit of students so that they will be better able to contribute to the global society.

Saint Louis University--through its curriculum, activities, and services--aims to develop students' capacities to actively participate in the world, providing them the tools to formulate and defend ideas, develop the ability to think clearly and objectively, and argue convincingly, in order to make a difference tomorrow with what they are learning today.
