With a wide curriculum, study abroad programs, academic internships, unlimited academic resources, and many public service opportunities locally in Baltimore as well as around the globe, Johns Hopkins University is a place where students of all disciplines can truly explore their interests. Students are encouraged to delve into different areas of study with the comfort of knowing that there are many academic resources available to ensure their success.
Academically, their professors are great champions of success and can provide mentoring as well as support for future endeavors. The schools of both Engineering and Arts and Sciences have advising offices staffed by professionals who also support faculty advising.
Tutoring and study consulting services are also free and readily available. The Office of Pre-Professional Programs and Advising is there to offer study consulting services and to guide students through the stressful task of applying to law, medical, or graduate school, while the Career Center will help those looking for internships and jobs after graduation. Staffed by experienced and available professionals, these offices are often integral parts of a student's success after college. There are also mentoring programs, study consultants, tutoring, a Writing Center, a Counseling Center, and more.
Johns Hopkins University Offers Diverse Academic Programs and Activities for its Undergraduate Students
Because of the academic and professional support available, JHU students are often able to combine academic interests that may not be possible at other institutions. Many of the diverse academic programs are flexible enough to allow for double majors and minors, even in widely diverse subjects, giving students the freedom to pursue the classes, projects, and opportunities that interest them the most. With this flexibility among diverse academic programs, students emerge from their college experience as enlightened, educated young people who truly want to make a difference in the world.
JHU students thrive in an independent, research- and service-oriented environment. This is proven by the large numbers of students who enter graduate school, apply successfully to professional schools, co-author publications with famous faculty, win national scholarships like the Marshall and Truman, become leaders in their professions, and make a difference to the community while enrolled and for years beyond.
As students find their way academically, they are also encouraged to pursue student activities outside of the classroom, and they are given the necessary resources to pursue any and all interests. The campus boasts over 350 student-run groups and organizations, running the gamut from academic and cultural societies to performing arts, political, and religious groups. In addition, about 75 percent of undergraduates participate in at least one volunteer activity during their time at Johns Hopkins, and many are much more involved.
Students are introduced to these opportunities immediately; part of freshmen orientation includes a service day that takes students on various service projects in the area. The orientation process also includes a student activities fair where students can hear about all the many clubs and organizations.

While public service activities and other involvement can lead students almost anywhere, many of the greatest opportunities for them are just outside of campus. Students often participate in tutoring programs with Baltimore City schoolchildren and local beautification projects. Baltimore offers many excellent theater and performing art venues, yearly ethnic festivals, quirky communities, and other great cultural opportunities, such as the Baltimore Museum of Art, located adjacent to campus.
In easy reach of Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City, students at JHU have the ability to follow their interests off campus and even out of the area. The availability of these activities allows students to explore new interests, further develop passions that they may already have, and develop their own communities of support.
Hopkins has a deserved international reputation for public service, and many of the programs reflect that commitment. JHU is home to the nation's best hospital and public health school, as well as the highly regarded medical and nursing schools, along with the School for Advanced International Studies. These offer resources and a culture that undergraduates use and celebrate, whether through research, clinical work, or international study. Wherever students decide to go, they will find the resources at JHU to explore their possibilities to the fullest.
