Health and Human Services, U.S. Department of (HHS):
The section of the federal government that provides assistance to future health
care practitioners. The Nursing Student Loan, Health Profession Student Loan,
and Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students Program are among some of the aid
programs administered by HHS. The Secretary of the Health and Human Services
Department is a member of the Presidents Cabinet.
Health Professions Programs: Federal student
assistance programs administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services for students preparing for careers in the health sciences. HHS aid
programs include both scholarships and loans.
Health Professions Student Loan (HPSL): A long
term, low interest loan program designed to assist students in specific health
professions disciplines. Currently, the interest rate is 5% for the life of the
loan. Repayment begins one year after the student ceases to be enrolled
full-time.

Hope Scholarship: A federal tax credit for higher
education expenses; allows deductions on a per-student basis for the freshman
and sophomore years of postsecondary education.
