Graduate and Certificate Programs in Special Education at Adelphi University

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the Ruth S. Ammon School of Education at Adelphi University provides a comprehensive range of Master of Science and certificate programs in early childhood, childhood, adolescent, and bilingual special education.

Students acquire the training needed to (1) receive certification in a number of areas, (2) provide excellent education in inclusive educational settings and regular classrooms and (3) encourage children to become as independent as possible and to integrate them into a broader spectrum of activities.

MS in Early Childhood Special Education: Single Certification (In-service Track)

The MS in Early Childhood Special Education with a single certification (in-service) leads to certification to teach students with disabilities from birth through second grade. The 30-credit program is intended for students who already hold New York State certification in early childhood education.

MS in Early Childhood Special Education: Dual Certification (Pre-service Track)

The 55-credit MS in Early Childhood Special Education with dual certification (pre-service) leads to certification in early childhood education and special education for students with disabilities from birth through second grade. This program is intended for candidates who do not have New York State teacher certification in any area.

MS in Early Childhood Special Education: Dual Certification (In-service Track)

The 37-credit MS in Early Childhood Special Education with dual certification (in-service) enables individuals to receive certification in early childhood education and special education for students from birth through age 2. It is for candidates who hold New York State certifications in teaching areas other than the two listed above.

Advanced Certificate in Early Childhood Special Education

The 22-credit Advanced Certificate in Early Childhood Special Education is for individuals who have New York State certification in early childhood education and a master's degree, but who want to pursue additional training and certification. This program leads to certifications in early childhood special education for students with disabilities from birth to second grade, along with a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study.

MS in Childhood Special Education: Single Certification (In-service Track)

The MS in Childhood Special Education (first through sixth grades) program was created for individuals who are certified in elementary or childhood education. The curriculum includes 33 to 39 credits and consists of core courses, 125 hours of fieldwork, a capstone course, and a student teaching practicum.

MS in Childhood Special Education (Non-certification Track)

The 33-credit MS in Childhood Special Education consists of 33 credits including such courses as Introduction to Special Education, Team Collaboration, and Methods of Instruction.

MS in Childhood Special Education in Inclusive Settings: Dual Certification (Pre-service and In-service Tracks)

The MS in Childhood Special Education in Inclusive Settings (dual certification) includes a 49-credit pre-service track that is designed for individuals who do not have any classroom teaching certificates and a 36-credit in-service track for individuals who have classroom teaching certificates in areas other than childhood (first through sixth grades) or special education.

The curriculum for each track includes special education courses, student teaching with reflective practice, a capstone course and prerequisite courses.

Advanced Certificate in Childhood Special Education (First through Sixth Grades)

Students in the Advanced Certificate in Childhood Special Education program complete 12 to 15 credits of coursework, including fieldwork and student teaching, and 6 credits of prerequisite courses. Upon graduating, students are prepared to become certified to teach individuals with disabilities in first through sixth grades.

MS in Adolescent Special Education in Inclusive Settings: Dual Certification (Pre-service Track)

The MS in Adolescent Special Education in Inclusive Settings (dual certification) prepares future secondary school educators for New York State certification in one of four areas (English, math, science, or social studies) and in special education in inclusive settings for seventh through 12th grades. It includes 18 credits of prerequisite courses in foundation and literacy, 37 credits of advance courses and a 6-credit student teaching practicum.

Advanced Certificate in Adolescence Special Education (Seventh through 12th Grades)

This certificate program prepares secondary school educators who have licenses in content areas to become certified in special education. The program consists of 12 to 21 credits of coursework including core and elective courses, a teaching practicum, and prerequisite courses.

MS in Bilingual Childhood Special Education in Inclusive Settings (First through Sixth Grades)

The MS in Bilingual Childhood Special Education in inclusive settings leads to certifications in childhood education, childhood special education, and bilingual extension. The program includes a 58-credit pre-service and 45-credit in-service track. The pre-service track is open to individuals who do not hold teaching certificates, and the in-service track is for those who have teaching certificates in childhood education.

The curricula for these tracks consist of professional core courses and content area instruction including a teaching practicum and capstone course.

MS in Bilingual Childhood Special Education in Inclusive Settings: Alternative Certificate (Transitional B Program)

The alternative certificate program leads to the Transitional B license for career changers or non-certified teachers that enables them to teach in shortage areas. The 52-credit curriculum includes pre-service and in-service courses and content area instruction. It is open to teacher candidates who hold alternative certificates or licenses and leads to certifications in childhood education, childhood special education, and bilingual extension.

Distinguished Faculty Members in Special Education

At the core of Adelphi University's graduate programs in special education is a distinguished group of faculty members who are dedicated to cultivating outstanding special education teachers. Associate Professor Anne M. Mungai, PhD, is one of these talented instructors. Her research interests include special education issues and multicultural and gender issues in education. She has been involved with several grant-sponsored research projects, authored and co-authored several books, and presented her work at a variety of conferences and events.
