The Alden March Bioethics Institute at Albany Medical College

The Alden March Bioethics Institute (AMBI) of Albany Medical College (AMC) is a multidisciplinary center focusing on bioethics education, clinical ethics consultation, and research, as well as an internationally recognized leader in the growing field of bioethics. AMBI offers a flexible and comprehensive selection of academic programs in bioethical education and specialized training for students both on campus and online. Online graduate programs provide mid-career professionals, joint degree students, and post-baccalaureate students with opportunities to supplement current education or career training. Programs are designed to prepare professionals to address important ethical issues in a variety of settings.

Master of Science in Bioethics

The Alden March Bioethics Institute offers 2 Master of Science (MS) in Bioethics programs. The comprehensive program educates students in identifying ethical dilemmas, creating and scrutinizing policies and practices in various settings, and thinking and writing critically about these issues.

The MS with a concentration in clinical ethics consultation has the same requirements as the comprehensive program, and also provides additional advanced training and supervision in 2 main ASBH core competencies over a period of 2 years. Students complete the AMBI Certificate in Clinical Ethics during year 1, and the AMBI virtual fellowship coursework in year 2.

Each program requires 30 credit hours of flexible online coursework and an on-site capstone course that provides specialized training in ethics consultation.

Doctorate of Professional Studies in Bioethics Program

AMBI offers 2 different concentrations within the Doctorate of Professional Studies (DPS) in Bioethics program. The 1st is a concentration in health ethics & policy. This program is designed for those who seek advanced education and training in both knowledge and applied skills pertaining to health policy in the context of bioethics. This degree aims to provide trainees with advanced level knowledge and practical skills in preparation for assuming professional leadership roles in health ethics and policy.

The AMBI DPS in Bioethics with a concentration in clinical ethics consultation is perhaps the 1st online program of its kind to offer advanced training and education in clinical ethics consultation. The program was created in response to the need for working health care professionals with advanced, on-site fellowship training. DPS students use their existing professional work environments as the clinical training ground for the program. Graduates demonstrate advanced level mastery of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH) Core Competencies in clinical ethics consultation.

Three Dual Degree Programs

AMBI offers three dual degree programs to qualified students seeking professional careers as physicians, scientists, and legal professionals. The college offers a dual Juris Doctorate (JD)/MS in Bioethics program in conjunction with Albany Law School. An MD/MS in Bioethics dual degree program is offered with Albany Medical College. AMBI and AMC also offer a dual program leading to an MS in Bioethics/PhD in Basic Medical Sciences.

Graduate Certificate Programs

The Alden March Bioethics Institute offers three graduate certificate programs designed to supplement the skills of working professionals. The Graduate Certificate in Clinical Ethics addresses ASBH educational core competencies through 3 online courses that focus on bedside clinical ethics and 1 on-site capstone course of intensive training.

The Graduate Certificate in Clinical Ethics Consultation is an advanced program referred to as the AMBI virtual clinical ethics fellowship. The program is designed to provide more structured training in ASBH core competencies for existing health care ethics consultants.

The Dual Graduate Certificate Program with the Department of Pastoral Care at AMC provides training for people to better help patients and their families with both the spiritual dimension of human suffering and the background of clinical bioethics. A student can complete both certificates within a 12-month period.

A Passionate and Experienced Faculty

Dr. Paul Burcher brings his knowledge and education in philosophy and medicine to AMBI. An attending OB-GYN physician at Albany Medical Center, Dr. Burcher's interests surround issues arising in the clinical encounter between patient and physician.

AMBI also has an extensive range of adjunct faculty members to teach many of our offered elective courses. Utilizing adjunct faculty from all over the United States allows us to have world class experts teach their specific topics to our students, thus providing more in depth knowledge and expertise during our courses.
