Outstanding Faculty at Auburn Ginn School of Engineering

Many of the faculty members at Ginn School of Engineering are recognized in their fields and have received acknowledgment from professional, scientific, and government organizations for their contributions to engineering. Engineering faculty members include 2 members of the National Academy of Engineering.

Among the many illustrious members of the School of Engineering's faculty is Jeffrey C. Suhling, Quina Distinguished Professor and Department Chair. Dr. Suhling is an active member of the ASME, the IEEE, IMAPS, TAPPI, and SEM. His research interests include stress and strain analysis, advanced and composite materials, electronic packaging, silicon sensors, test chips, and the mechanics of paper and wood.

Alice E. Smith is an associate editor of "Computers and Operations Research," "International Journal of General Systems," and "EEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation," and has served as Chair for the Council of IE Department heads. Her research interests include modeling, analysis and optimization of complex manufacturing and engineering design systems using computational intelligence (artificial neural networks, evolutionary algorithms, and fuzzy systems) combined with techniques from probability and statistics and from operations research.

Chris Roberts is the George and Dorothy Stafford Uthlaut Professor and Co-director of the NSF-IGERT on Integrated Biorefining. Dr. Roberts's areas of research include nano-material synthesis and processing using tunable solvent systems, nano-catalyst design, alternative fuels synthesis via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, molecular thermodynamics, and supercritical fluid and gas-expanded liquid technologies.

Faculty research is currently supported by the National Science Foundation, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Energy, the National Energy Technology Lab, and others.

Quality of Life at Affordable Cost

The Auburn-Opelika metropolitan area is located in east-central Alabama, and has a population just under 150,000. This fast growing area offers a reasonably priced, small town atmosphere while extending many of the services of a big city, including a flourishing arts community.

Auburn's campus was initially designed by acclaimed American horticulturist Frederick Law Olmstead. A 21st century conversion back to an all pedestrian campus is ongoing, remaking former roads as charming, tree-lined thoroughfares throughout the school.
