Master of Science in Management

The APSU College of Business offers a Master of Science (MS) in Management that enrolls students with bachelor's degrees in any area of study. This 30 semester-hour graduate program can be completed entirely online over the course of one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study.

Unlike Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs, APSU's Master of Science in Management caters to recent graduates with little or no previous management experience. Completing courses during accelerated terms, students gain the knowledge they need to succeed in the business world.

Fast Track Terms

Courses for the Master of Science in Management are offered during fast-track terms that last only eight weeks. This allows students to complete courses--and the entire program--at a faster pace.

E-rate Tuition Reduction for Online Students

Because coursework for this program is completed online, out-of-state students receive APSU's eRate, a significantly lower tuition rate that is roughly half the normal cost of out-of-state tuition, or about one and a half times in-state tuition. To be eligible for eRate, students must be classified as nonresidents of Tennessee and they must be enrolled exclusively in online courses.

The Master of Science in Management includes ten courses. Students coming to the program with a bachelor's degree in an area other than business take seven required courses and three electives. Students with undergraduate business degrees take six required courses and four electives.

Required coursework includes the study of technology and information system management, leadership and organizational dynamics, the use of financial reports, human resource issues for managers, strategic management, and applied business research. Students without undergraduate degrees in business must also complete business foundation coursework.

Accounting and Other Electives

APSU's graduate program in management offers a rich assortment of elective courses so students may pursue a course of study that supports their career objectives. The program offers four accounting electives: "Accounting Theory for Leaders," "Tax for Organizations," "Emerging Technology in Financial Information Systems," and "Assurance Services and Professional Ethics."

In addition, students may choose from other electives that cover employer/labor relations, legal issues in HR management, motivational systems, and other emerging issues in management.

A Dedicated Faculty With Business Initiative

The faculty in the College of Business at Austin Peay State University includes enthusiastic and well-published researchers. Professor John Volker has published extensively on topics ranging from private retail firm growth, Web businesses, and business literacy. He is also the director of the Center for Entrepreneurship, which supports new student-led business ventures in the APSU community.

Professor Michael Holt, who teaches many of the graduate course electives, has recently published several articles on cultural institutions, new venture creation, and the economic implications of the tragedy in Japan.

Professor Jerry Plummer has published articles and book chapters on subjects as varied as Chinese-US trade relations, African American banking and insurance in Tennessee, and the role of mortgage brokers in the recent economic crisis. Professor Roger Clark, who teaches Managerial Use of Financial Reports, recent published 2 articles on systemic risk in the global economy and the handling of casualty losses for clients.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must each have completed a bachelor's degree in any subject with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Students must submit their GMAT scores and official transcripts from all colleges that they attended and any graduate courses completed.
