Master of Arts in Corporate Communication at Austin Peay State University

Austin Peay State University offers a corporate communication graduate program that prepares students for careers in academia and in the advertising, marketing, personal, print, and broadcast sales, and public relations industries. The program, which is offered entirely online, is specially designed to accommodate business professionals working in fields of communication.

For seasoned professionals, this program serves as preparation for managerial and supervisory positions. For students with limited professional experience, the degree offers delayed benefits. While it does not typically provide an advantage in gaining initial employment or negotiating salary, the degree will prepare students to advance in position as they gain experience in the field.

Corporate Communication Curriculum

Students complete 13 semester hours of required core courses, three to six semester hours of research, and 15 to 18 semester hours of electives. Electives include, but are not limited to, courses in advertising strategies, public relations, consumer and audience behavior, the economics of mass media, new technologies and ethics, and web content management.

Graduate students who wish to pursue doctoral degrees often complete the 6 semester-hour thesis, rather than the 3 semester-hour research project.

E-rate Tuition Reduction for Online Students

Because coursework for the Master of Arts in Corporate Communication is completed online, out-of-state students receive APSU's eRate, a significantly lower tuition rate that is roughly half the normal cost of out-of-state tuition, or about one and a half times in-state tuition. To be eligible for eRate, students must be classified as nonresidents of Tennessee and they must be enrolled exclusively in online courses.

Fast and Professional Tracks

Both the corporate communication and the general communication program may be completed on a fast track (16 months) or professional track (26 months). Students on the fast track begin in the summer semester and graduate at the end of their second summer semester. Students on the professional track take only one or two courses at a time and complete the degree in two years, including two summer semesters.

Faculty of Researchers and Real World Practitioners

The faculty in the APSU Department of Communication includes both award-winning researchers and professionals with experience in the communications industry. Professor Michael Gotcher, for example, has published widely and has received the John Franklin Mee Award from the Academy of Management and the Daniel Rohrer Award from the American Forensic Association as well as the APSU Hawkins Award for research excellence.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must each have completed a bachelor's degree in any subject with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Students must submit their GRE scores and official transcripts from all colleges that they attended and any graduate courses completed.
